It does seem odd for her to go supporting, and she did win at Cannes.

Oscars and Globes she will likely go supporting, so that there can be a push for Blanchett and Mara to both win, which is likely. BAFTA will likely recognise her as a co-lead and nominate them both in lead.

Why not? She’s been nominated as Lead before. Then again, when was the last time two actresses have been nominated for Lead for the same film? 1977? And before that, 1950? I’m not entirely sure, but I wouldnt say the odds are in their favour. More likely one gets Lead and the other, Supporting…..

Thelma and Louise (1991) was the last time two actress were nominated for lead in the same film and before that was Terms of Endearment (1983).

Rooney Mara can go Lead for Carol and get the same status & fate as The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo in 2011.

Mara could well be Streep’s lucky charm-competition as in 2011.

    ***

    2011 = 2015  Oscar Best Actress Nominees

    1. Meryl Streep, The Iron Lady (WINNER) = Meryl Streep, Ricki and The Flash
    2. Viola Davis, The Help = Carey Mulligan, Suffragette
    3. Michelle Williams, My Week with Marilyn = Emily Blunt, Sicario OR Jennifer Lawrence, Joy
    4. Glenn Close, Albert Nobbs = Lily Tomlin, Grandma
    5. Rooney Mara, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo = Rooney Mara, Carol

I need to see the film first but if this is the story when both actresses are leading, then I hope she’ll go lead anyway, a’la “The Kids Are All Right”. I’d rather have Julianne Moore snubbed (as it happened) than nominated in supporting for that film, despite amazing performance.

Two Best Actress nominees from the same film:
    1. 1950: “All About Eve” – Anne Baxter & Bette Davis
    2. 1959: “Suddenly, Last Summer” – Katharine Hepburn & Elizabeth Taylor
    3. 1977: “The Turning Point” – Anne Bancroft & Shirley MacLaine
    4. 1983: “Terms of Endearment” – Shirley MacLaine (winner) & Debra Winger
    5. 1991: “Thelma & Louise” – Geena Davis & Susan Sarandon

If both Mara & Blanchett give deserving performances, then it would be great to see them both nominated for Best Actress. I think those things are described in their contracts anyway.

I don’t think it’s that likely at all.
Blanchett won two years ago and it was her second win. And while she’s respected, she’s certainly not beloved. I’ve written that already. Just take a look at the ballots and what voters wrote about her. They loved the performance but some of them felt it was necessary to point out Blanchett wasn’t somebody they loved.
Other than that, to win a third Oscar is a hard thing to achieve. All the winners were slightly older than Blanchett.
And Blanchett isn’t really the MVP of her film. Just take a look at the reviews – they mostly praise both her and Mara, but Mara is getting a more emotional response. Harvey is smart. He knows Blanchett has too many hurdles and Mara is a proven winner already. It will be her second nomination, she’s young and hot and a good actor. She can go into lead actress and she can win the whole thing.

Rooney Mara as Lead Actress for Carol would have a BETTER Narrative versus Cate Blanchett.

Harvey Weinstein should demote Cate Blanchett to Supporting Actress as she was summarily ignored-dismissed already @ Cannes.  At least Rooney Mara got a consolation TIE win.

Insisting Blanchett as Lead for Carol will just result in a cancel-out with Lead bids for Truth & Rooney Mara for Carol.

As with August: Osage County for Julia Roberts ….. Harvey Weinstein should make the decision by end of TIFF and clarify placements to avoid confusion & cannibalization.

BLANCHETTS  better role is definitely Mary Mapes in TRUTH.
The lesbian in a department store doesnt scream oscar to me so
I hope she gets the nod for TRUTH…Rooney Mara will either get
a lead nomination if thats the case..or Harvey might just deem her
supporting early on to solidify Blanchett’s chances..

    BLANCHETT- TRUTH
    MARA- CAROL
    TOMLIN- GRANDMA
    MULLIGAN- SUFFRAGETTE
    STREEP- RICKY AND THE FLASH

Seriously, what’s the point of making a separate thread for Rooney Mara’s possible leading nomination when we have the Best Actress thread?

GoldDerby’s main problem (Besides design) is the overcrowded amount of threads and topics, and this doesn’t help. Seriously, I feel very irritated every time I come here and see 20930920 threads about insignificant or super specific things.

It’s not against the rules, you’ll just have to get over it. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
