Captain Phillips is an upcoming film directed by Paul Greengrass and starring Tom Hanks. The film is a biopic of Captain Richard Phillips who was taken hostage by Somali Pirates during the Maersk Alabama hijacking in 2009. It is scheduled to be released on October 11, 2013.May 8, 2013 at 12:59 pm #101257
This actually looks good. And it looks like Tom hanks is actually trying! Good to see that, along with ‘Cloud Atlas’, he seems to be making an effort again.May 8, 2013 at 1:47 pm #101258

I thought the same thing. Hanks deserved a Best Actor nod for Cloud Atlas (although I admit, it was an insanely strong category last year), but I’m happy to hear he’s keeping it up.May 8, 2013 at 4:19 pm #101259
Movie looks good, and i like Tom Hanks and his career. However as of late, i’m starting to see just ‘Tom Hanks in a movie’ type of thing, if that makes sense? Might just be me, but i hope it passes.May 8, 2013 at 6:11 pm #101260
Very good trailer. Makes up for The Butler’s trailer.
I’ve always enjoyed Greengrass’ style of filmmaking and this trailer looks like he’s going strong. He’s never really directed a remarkable acting performance before, so it will be interesting to see what Hanks does with this. This could end up being his Oscar vehicle this year – especially since all sources say he is supporting in Saving Mr. Banks.May 8, 2013 at 7:20 pm #101261

They do? Which sources?May 8, 2013 at 7:30 pm #101262
Every write-up (both official and amateur) that came from the film’s screening say it is entirely Emma Thompson’s show and that hanks has a minor supporting part, even more minor than Colin Farrell.May 9, 2013 at 4:34 am #101263
Intense trailer. This feels like Hanks is back on his game again. I could see this going all the way for him like Denzel’s “Flight.”May 9, 2013 at 5:48 pm #101264
Glad somebody else made the connection to Flight.
This could very well end up being this year’s Flight. Respected, two-time Oscar winning actor making his big comeback to serious films, wokring with a well-known and previously Oscar-nominated director. An acclaimed film that deserves many Oscar nods but won’t get very much recognition.May 9, 2013 at 7:49 pm #101265
The trailer didn’t really strike me as Oscar worthy. I guess it could make some noise like zero dark thirty or flight but there is so much strong comeptition…..May 9, 2013 at 8:34 pm #101266
I hope (and know it will) that this will be a much better movie than Flight lolMay 10, 2013 at 6:28 am #101267
Wow. Impressive trailer. But then again why should i or anyone be surprised, its Paul Greenglass after all. The guy`s a great director. I now kinda wanna see this.May 13, 2013 at 7:49 pm #101268
The trailer was shown before my viewing of The Great Gatsby. The audience loved it – quite a few unexpected ooh’s and ah’s, and great reaction to the “I am the captain now” line. This film could be an unexpected hit if this reaction ends up being the norm and not the exception.May 15, 2013 at 4:50 am #101269
Tom Hanks playing a hero, again.
Bah.May 18, 2013 at 9:36 am #101270
Interesting that you say that, seabel, because after doing some research into the real-life story that this film is based on, I discovered that the “hero” (using the term by its more typical definition) was actually the ship’s Chief Engineer Mike Perry, who was responsible for keeping the crew safe (there were no US casualties) and almost single-handedly tackled and captured the pirate ringleader. In the film, he will be portrayed by David Warshofsky, a character actor who has worked steadily since the late 80’s and has appeared in numerous Oscar-nominated films. I don’t know how large his role in the film will be, but he could be one to look out for.
