Combined with the fact that Elba missed, and the only nominations for black-centric Creed and Straight Outta Compton were for white people…gosh, one would think the Academy really needs to rethink its point of view.

If anyone tries to argue that Carol was just too stylized yet cold and substantively empty for Oscar voters — remember that the freaking Revenant just got 12 nominations. What a joke.

The academy are a bunch of homophobic bigots. Period!!!
    – No best pic or best director nomination for Carol
    – No supporting actress nob for Mya Taylo’s incredible turn in Tangerine

But on a side note, Regina George #RachelMcAdama got some deserving recognition

This is a ridiculous thread. They didn’t like Carol for picture but nominated the 2 women for the film. People act like Carol was this perfect, brilliant film, it wasnt. Elba was snubbed in a stacked supporting actor category.

It was way better than what got nominated, that’s for sure.

Redmayne was nominated for playing a transgender character, so there are in fact three queer performances nominated this year – are you more mad that the movie itself wasn’t nominated?

Carol underwhelmed me, but I am very happy it was recognized with the races it did manage to squeeze in. I don’t think the voters are being that bad; considering 2 other female driven films managed Best Picture and Screenplay nods just goes to show that voters prefered those stories over Carol‘s. Earlier we were being told only 1 female driven film (Brooklyn) was going to have a shot to get that best picture slot when PGA released. So perhaps the academy just didn’t warm up to Haynes movie as much.

    #oscarssostraight lmao

It’s a proven fact that the Academy is compromised of mainly middle-aged / old white men. They only support minority films if it consists of a slavemaster, an angry fat woman, a maid or some woman who plays a sexual toy to a white man. They have only made a few exceptions over the years.

Carol is a perfect, brilliant film.

    But two things:
    1) I don’t like personifications of “The Academy” as if they are a single organism deciding which way winds blow with secret agendas. The problem is that large voting groups provide easy, generic  and palatable decisions. Always. In anything.

    2) If we’re going to force this personification, I don’t think the Academy has a homophobia problem–I think it’s much more aimed at gender bias and anti-feminine. If it was anti-gay we would have seen many less nominations below-the-line for both it and Brokeback Mountain, and a loss for Sean Penn in Milk and probably not a nomination for Eddie Redmayne in The Danish Girl. But that’s the thing… Brokeback, Penn and Redmayne are MEN in MALE-CENTRIC gay films. Carol is a film about women, both literally and in its subtext. It has female producers and a female writer and a director that has a uniquely female-driven perspective on the world and in his art. Below the line it excels because those are artistic fields where gender bias is less of a problem.

Why then, do Brooklyn and Room work? Because their visions are much more universal and can be applied to the plights of men, too. What Carol and Therese go through in Carol is inseperable from their gender. Room’s Ma could easily be Pa and thematically it would still work. Brooklyn could swap genders across the board and it would still work.

I’m just imaginging how much the film would have swept if Tom Hooper had directed the material in his style…and I shudder.

Or the original intended director, John Crowley! Ugh.

I’m happy we got the most perfect version of Carol anyone could have imagined.
