Oh brother! My very favorite performance of the year by an actor vs. by very least favorite performance by an actor in 2016. I get it: Affleck gives terrible speeches, has a scandal going on, and is not actively campaigning – HOWEVER: his performance deserves to win.
Then there is Washington, who has won 2 Oscars already. He plays a patriarchal monster, truly one of my least favorite characters ever – (yes, villains can be the best and deserve to win; Cate Blanchett in Blue Jasmine played a very unlikable character yet she deserved to win. It’s an acting award). Washington gives a hammy overdone performance. I saw James Earl Jones on the stage in the role of Troy and while I disliked the character just as much I loved Jones’s performance. He was helped by great chemistry with Courtney B Vance and Mary Alice in particular. This was missing from the film version due to Jovan Adepo’s lackluster performance.
The race is clearly between these two. I prefer Garfield, Gosling and Mortensen to Washington. I am still hoping Affleck wins a much deserved Oscar next month.January 29, 2017 at 9:11 pm #1201998732
Agreed, and this is coming from a guy who is a huge Denzel fan. This simply isn’t close to his best work, while Affleck’s performance stuck with me for days. After tonight I’m inclined to think Denzel has it locked but idk, I think there is going to be a lot of pushback from the academy from people that don’t like the stagey performance and also those that don’t want him to join the legendary 3 actor club. He’s a lot like Leo, polarizing people like them have a lot of friends, but also a lot of enemies, as evidenced by BAFTA.January 29, 2017 at 9:13 pm #1201998733
I do think Casey is locked for BAFTA so maybe that swings the momentum back in his favor, but either way this is the most and probably only close race come Oscar nightJanuary 29, 2017 at 9:15 pm #1201998736
Here’s the thing he only has one for leading actor so another isn’t gotta hurt and give me a fucking break the academy loves theatrical or flashy performances afflecks performance is too subtle to win get the fuck over it he is winningJanuary 29, 2017 at 9:17 pm #1201998738
Denzel is winning. I think that Casey is rubbing people the wrong way and would much rather give Denzel his third than Casey his first.January 29, 2017 at 9:19 pm #1201998742

Denzel aleady wonJanuary 29, 2017 at 9:23 pm #1201998751
The people who think Casey is winning are the same idiots who picked Keaton to win oscars after redmayne was sweeping everythingJanuary 29, 2017 at 9:24 pm #1201998752
i still think affleck will win the oscar considering the sag voting block includes a lot of theater actors, many of whom probably voted for denzel because he starred in a film adaptation of an iconic play and won a tony for the same roleJanuary 29, 2017 at 9:27 pm #1201998755
Denzel will prevail. Just look at how the crowd reacted when his name was announced.January 29, 2017 at 9:27 pm #1201998756
Don’t forget Denzel is also a theater trained actor which the academy loves ala mark rylance and don’t forget a lot of theater actors vote in the academy as wellJanuary 29, 2017 at 9:29 pm #1201998761
The crowd reacted great for Stallone last year too lol. So has an actor ever swept the critics awards and won CC, Drama Globe, and BAFTA, but lost the oscar? That’s what we’d be looking at here.January 29, 2017 at 9:29 pm #1201998762
Denzel is winning this 🙂January 29, 2017 at 9:29 pm #1201998763
This useless thread was only created by a predictably reactionary OP to prop up one nominee while shamelessly denigrating another one. Hope it gets closed promptly.
