From time to time, I’ve pondered at the reception that Catch Me If You Can received from the Academy, only receiving 2 nominations for Christopher Walken for Best Supporting Actor and Best Original Score for John Williams.

It had a positive reception, did very solid business at the box office, making $352 million worldwide, is based on a true story, and is made by Steven Spielberg who is an Oscar darling. Usually, those are key ingredients to scoring big in terms of nominations, yet for some reason, this one didn’t quite click. I would say that this is better than some of Spielberg’s later efforts, like Lincoln which got a lot of nominations. It’s also one of my favorite movies.

What do you guys think? Why do you think Catch Me If You Can didn’t quite ‘catch’ on? Let’s discuss.

The film made great box office back then;  although I dont think it was ever #1.
This is likely my favorite DiCaprio  performances, and I was very surprised that they passed him over.
The film scores high with both Metacritic and RT as well. Sigh.

I think that was the year of Gangs of New York, where Harvey was all over the film and place.( I am somewhere where I cant verify this)
That was also the year of The Two Towers, The Hours, Chicago (the lesser version of All That Jazz) and The Pianist. all high profile films and with backstories….quite a year actually.
CMifYC was also squeezed out of Screenplay and Editing.

So things didnt quite converge for the film that year, inspite of it being  based on a real person, the charming and terrific (this time) perf from Leo, and Spielberg’s sensitive Direction.
It happens this way sometimes. Or, perhaps often.
Anyways, I always recommend this film for those who havent seen it, DiCaprio fans, and the like. For me, the film is miles ahead of Lincoln.

Yes! So much better than Lincoln, War Horse, War of The Worlds, and Minority Report. I also would rather have Catch Me If You Can nominated for Best Picture over Gangs of New York AND Chicago.

I finally got around to seeing Catch Me If You Can for the first time about a year and a half ago. I was shocked to see Leo wasn’t nominated for this. This is by far my favourite performance from him! Definitily a shame this didn’t get more attention, this is a fantastic movie and I feel like had it come out now, it would’ve done fairly decently with the Oscars.
