(No, this isn’t about Lead/Supporting category fraud, but instead Genre)

With a variety of drama films that are borderline comedy being submitted in the Musical/Comedy categories at the Golden Globes this year, I wanted to come up with a list of the worst cases of this genre fraud in Golden Globes history – Drama films that should have been in Musical/ Comedy, and vice versa. Post your choices below and I’ll add them to the list:

    Comedy/Musical (Should be in Drama)
    American Hustle
    August: Osage County
    My Week With Marilyn
    Ray
    Walk The Line
    The Wolf of Wall Street

    Drama (Should be in Comedy/Musical)

Hahaha thanks – although I wouldn’t mind if Leo and Sandra won either

How about Walk the Line and My Week With Marilyn?

    Exactly – thanks 🙂

    Comedy/Musical (Should be in Drama)
    American Hustle

I think it’s worth mentioning that in this case Sony actually submitted AH as a drama, and it was the HFPA that found it more fitting for it to compete in the Comedy section.

Yeah I know – can’t decide if that’s sleazy or incredibly tactful

Ray, Walk the Line, La Mome and others like them might seem like category fraud, but I don’t think they can be considered as such. These aren’t a case of moving a movie around. The Globes are consistent that biopics like these, with a lot of scenes of musicians peforming, are considered to be musicals. Even if you disagree with that decision, it is a consistent placement that has at least some argument and logic behind it.

Check out Daniel Montgomery’s fun take on this very subject on the main page.

Philomena is in drama when it should certainly be in comedy/musical.

Two placements off the top of my head that I found odd: “Wonder Boys” and “About Schmidt” entered as dramas instead of comedies. HFPA let “My Week with Marilyn” sneak into the comedy race, and “Wonder Boys” and “About Schmidt” are knee-slappers in comparison.

This year, I think “Blue Jasmine” is more funny than it is dramatic. It’s one of Woody Allen’s harder-edged comedies, but “Crimes and Misdemeanors” or “Match Point” it’s not.

I think “Philomena” is in the right place. The advertising is pushing hard to suggest a quirky road trip movie about an adorable old lady, completely glossing over the outrage of the story of a woman who was sexually shamed and had her baby stolen and sold out from under her by convent nuns.

It looks extremely quirky-funny from the posters, which is all that I have had to go off of.

The category is all over the place,

Marion gets nommed in for miming her way through a few musical numbers in a drama whilst Bjork gets nommed in Drama for singing her way through a musical.

‘Musical’ shouldn’t mean a film with some songs in it Like Walk The Line or La Vie en Rose. It should be kept for actual musicals otherwise the combining of Comedy and Musical performances makes no sense at all.

Why don’t they get rid of automatically placing musicals into comedy? Since so few musicals are made today, just judge each one on its content, there are some dramatic musicals aren’t there? All that Jazz maybe?

This year, Blue Jasmine should be in Comedy while August: Osage County should be in Drama. What would have been extra fitting to have Blue Jasmine in Comedy is that when Blanchett won, she would have had won all three Film Acting categories (Drama/Elizabeth, Supporting/I’m Not There, and Comedy or Musical/Blue Jasmine). This would have been a nice cherry on the icing. It’s just all kinds of backwards this year. I would have put Saving Mr. Banks in Comedy. I would have for sure kept American Hustle in Drama. No doubt, Philomena is correctly in Drama. WTF is Before Midnight doing in Comedy? Same thing can be asked of The Wolf of Wall Street. I don’t think I’ve ever seen it so backwards and all over the place at the Globes the way it is this year.
