Annette Benning could arguably be supporting in American Beauty, since the movie focuses on her as much as Thora Birch with the main focus being on Kevin Spacey.

Where are these percentages from? Because I have Rooney Mara in particular at 68% of Carol. Not criticizing, just wondering.

Cicely Tyson should have been submitted in Supporting Actress for Sounder and she would have won. The true lead was the son played by Kevin Hooks.

Neal, Fletcher, Kerr in FHTE, Streep in Prada are classic examples.

Those that haven’t been mentioned yet:

Kristin Scott Thomas – The English Patient (Binoche was more of a lead)
Meryl Streep – One True Thing (it’s Zellweger’s story)
Shelley Winters – Place in the Sun (her character dies halfway through the movie for fuck’s sake!)
Samantha Morton – In America (that astonishing Bolger girl was more lead)
Sissy Spacek – Crimes of the Heart (they would totally campaign her in supporting these days)
Debra Winger – An Officer and a Gentleman (I fucking hate this nomination)

Anne Bancroft – love her, but she was supporting in most of her nominated performances: The Graduate AND Agnes of God AND Turning Point (AND probably also The Miracle Worker)

I think Anthony Hopkins is definitely one case. However, I was surprised at the low amount of screen time. I feel like his character is discussed a lot and his presence is felt quite a bit when he is not on screen.

This kind of category fraud doesn’t offend me as much as leads going supporting. That’s fucking appaling. I only hate supporting roles going leading when such person wins over true leads.

I’m probably in the minority here, but I honestly think Brie Larson was more supporting to Jacob Tremblay’s lead.

Completely agree. I still don’t quite understand how submitting in lead when you are supporting is a good idea. Isn’t it easier to win in supporting?

If you know you aren’t going to win anyway, maybe the prestige of saying you were nominated in a leading category? There is the view that supporting is the “lesser” category. But I wouldn’t say it’s easier to win in supporting, it just depends on who’s in the category, and how good your narrative is.

But also, is it fair to take an actual lead’s spot? Why is it more fair than the opposite? With no Hopkins in lead we would have a different Oscar-winner for example. I just think they need to make a rule about the whole thing.

If I’m not mistaken, Paramount actually wanted to push Shelley Winters in Supporting for A Place in the Sun (no doubt in the hopes of scoring Liz Taylor a nod too) but she refused.

I remember reading the same happening with Valerie Perrine for Lenny. Apparently, she felt like a nomination for Best Actress was a better career achievement than a Best Supporting Actress win.

..which sounds a little crazy nowadays, but honestly I think I’d prefer that too. I’m just one of those few people that thinks lead nominations/wins are more prestigious.

The reality is lead acting categories are considered the major prizes of the night along with director and picture.

Frankly, Perrine probably wouldn’t have prevailed in Supporting either.

Similarly, two years down the road, Talia Shire won several critics’ awards in Supporting for Rocky but insisted on a Lead campaign at the Oscars, where she was completely doomed.

True. And to people that act like it doesn’t really matter okay then why did goddess Cate Blanchett need one for Best Actress? She had one for Best Supporting Actress. But why was she owed a Lead one? Just because of Gwyneth Paltrow? Okay, well you got one for Supporting. They say “It doesn’t make a difference. An Oscar is an Oscar.” Well it mattered then. And now why does Judi Dench need one? Why did Kevin Spacey? Why did Jessica Lange? Because there’s just more prestige to a Leading Oscar.
