Compared to what happened to Edgar Ramirez and Matthias Schoenaerts, what makes Adele’s exclusion partcularly glaring is the inclusion of her less prominent co-star in the same category she was supposed to win in a cakewalk.

As atrocious as these rules are, what’s worse is that they don’t even give the candidates a choice to opt out of contention for the second rate breakthrough categories. They make damn sure that they don’t with the pre-selection process. Unconscionable.

Second consecutive Lead Actress nomination for Léa Seydoux, she was nominated last year for Les Adieux à la Reine, but lost to Emmanuelle Riva.

Adèle Exarchopoulos’s exclusion from Best Actress is not really that glaring, or as controversial as internet forums are making it out to be.

Seydoux received almost the same amount of acclaim as Exarchopoulos did, and this is not the first awards body that has is considered/prefered Exarchopoulos in the Newcomer category and not Lead Actress. Yes, she might’ve made her debut in 2005 (Martha), but her  international breakthrough was last year. She is THE emerging actress in Europe right now. Voters probably prefered or liked Seydoux’s performance more as a lead one than supporting.

And quite frankly,  Seydoux &  Exarchopoulos are co-leads. Adele might have more screen time, but they are co-leads in the film, that’s why they both won the Palme d’Or.

This is garbage. Seydoux was excellent but Exarchopoulos was the real lead of that movie, front and center. She’s the soul of the movie.

Actually, Adele wasn’t “shut out”, because she wasn’t even eligible for Best Actress in the first place. The rules state you can’t be in the newcomer category and the main acting category. Due to her being a newcomer, she was only eligible for the “Promising actress” category. I’m not sure why people are acting like this is a surprise, it was announced a few months ago that Adele wasn’t eligible for Best Actress. Because of that I knew (and said on here) that Lea would be put in lead actress – it was obvious, even though it’s really a big supporting role.

    It’s a silly rule, imo.

Marcelo – good catch – sending Renoir was a cynical move by the committee choosing their submission to pick a safe film that would appeal to the Academy voters, without remembering that there is a second committee more open to riskier films.

I’m surprised “Venus in Fur” received so many nominations. I’ve read it’s a lesser Polanski movie and his wife’s performance in the leading role is problematic, but she got nominated.

“Avant Que De Tout Perdre” is also nominated at the Oscars for Live Action Short Film. Also, Alexandre Desplat got Cesar and Oscar nominations in the same year for different films (“Venus in Fur” and “Philomena”).

Forget Adele Exarchopoulos. The biggest piece of news is the nomination for Julie Gayet whose affair with French President Francois Hollande recently made international headlines. I wonder whether voting took place before the scandal broke out.

I think a way of getting round the dilemma with the main categories and newcomer ones would be to count the votes for each separately, then if a breakthrough actor gets into the main category as well, cancel their nomination in the newcomer category. I guess the only reason they have the rule is so that it’s not obvious who’ll win best newcomer.
