’42’s’ Chadwick Boseman to play James Brown in biopic

Chadwick Boseman, who played Jackie Robinson in “42,” will portray James Brown in an untitled biopic of the soul singer.

“The Help” director Tate Taylor will helm the Universal Pictures movie from a script by “Fair Game” writers Jez and John-Henry Butterworth. Brian Grazer will produce, as will another backer who knows a thing or two about stage presence — Mick Jagger, under his Jagged Films banner.

The long-gestating project, which has been in the works since before Brown died in 2006, will chart the singer’s ascent from poverty in Augusta, Ga., to his place as the Godfather of Soul, tirelessly performing such hit songs as “Papa’s Got a Brand New Bag” and “I Got You (I Feel Good).”

With his performance as Robinson earlier this year, Boseman demonstrated the necessary charisma to play an iconic figure — that movie went on to gross a strong $95 million at the domestic box office, and Boseman earned praise from critics for the tenacity of his portrayal.

“The actor brings real force and dignity to the part, as well as a fierceness that will not be pushed around,” Kenneth Turan wrote in the Los Angeles Times.

In an interview with The Times in January, Boseman described playing the ground-breaking Brooklyn Dodger as a high-stakes endeavor — one likely to be matched by his new gig.

“It’s intimidating because everybody has their interest in who he is,” Boseman said of playing Robinson. “He’s a lot of different things to a lot of different people. And none of them are necessarily the correct thing.”

The Brown biopic will begin filming in Mississippi this fall.

Interesting casting choice. Rumor is that both Viola Davis & Octavia Spencer will have roles in the film as well.

You know, I like both actresses, but they aren’t the only black actresses in Hollywood. How about giving someone else a shot? Kimberly Elise, Halle Berry (she could use a good role), Macy Gray, Angela Bassett, Sanaa Lathan, Regina King, etc..

LOL! i love them both. And I like all of the other actresses you named. But, I think the reason they MIGHT (because it’s not confirmed), be attached to this project, is because Tate Taylor, who directed The Help is doing this, too. He probably approaced them first, because of the bond they formulated over The Help, and because it was such as success. I wouldn’t doubt if some of those other names become involved in this project, too, as James was a complex star, and could leave room for a number of roles.

Sidenote: I kinda hope at some point he also gets to do a Tarantino movie as well. Something about him makes me think that he would do really well in a Tarantino movie.

Looks messy, but Chadwick Boseman seems to give it his all. I can see him winning the Golden Globe ala Jamie Foxx and Joaquin Phoenix

Good for Chadwick Boseman; Really liked that cast from ’42. Hoping this catapults him to greater notoriety.

The trailer looks ok. I hope they don’t beat around the bush and have in the film how he treated motowns Tammi Terrell.

Spencer’s role sounds like it could potentially be baity, depending on screentime. Maternal figure, runs a brothel (prostitute adjacent). Same for Davis although it seems like she probably has even less screentime, but I guess we know how much Davis can do with a few minutes

I wonder about the Box Office. I’m not sure it can rival The Help for $ but it could usher in a new tier of Brown fans. I’m hoping there’s a good blend of male/female viewers and differing age groups.

From the little I’ve seen of Chadwick, I think he’s good. His costars are no slouches either.

    Fingers crossed!

You mean his contribution to her untimely death?
