Just watched Kenneth Branagh’s Cinderella and that movie is definitely getting at least one Oscar nomination, for Costume Design. I can also see it getting in Production Design, Makeup & Hairstyling and Original Score. What do you guys think? Frankly, if Meryl got in for Into the Woods, Cate Blanchett should at least be considered for this, she’s by far the best thing about the movie – I know, I know, she’ll be nominated for Carol…
I’m also wondering if that short-film based on the Frozen characters that is shown before the movie is a shoo-in for Animated Short. Based on the studio’s strength, it’s possible, but…my God, it’s terribly uninspiredMarch 30, 2015 at 9:29 pm #183245
This movie may have the most early winner of next year’s ceremony: Costume Design. I, sincerely, doubt that anyone will beat Sandy Powell.March 30, 2015 at 10:54 pm #183246
We’ve pretty much discussed this on the Cinderella threadMarch 31, 2015 at 8:46 am #183247
If that short gets in to Animated Short at the Oscars, it will be really dissapointing. It was totally pointless and not particularly well-done. I think that it they will do a big push for it (because they have the money) but I want Pixar to just jump in and blow us away with a fantastic short.
As for Cinderella in general, Costume Design and Production Design should be it. Not sure they’ll win either one, but I don’t think they’ll miss either one.

I haven’t seen the movie, but that dress was everywhere so I don’t see it failing at getting at least a nomination in Costume Design (with a win being entirely possible)… As I said I didn’t see the movie so I can’t speak about other categories!
1st place - Emmy Awards Nominations 2016March 31, 2015 at 10:19 am #183249
Powell will surely receive 2 nominations, and might win for Cinderella. Blanchett’s only chance at a major nod is with the Globes (and it depends on the competition).
The film’s pretty much a lock for Costumes, and a strong contender for PD and Makeup & Hair.March 31, 2015 at 10:48 am #183250
Production Design is possible, but Costume Design does already feel like a lock; they truly are exquisite.March 31, 2015 at 4:52 pm #183251
Design ones sound about right. Powell will also have Carol, won’t she? Although the costumes in Cinderella are probably understandably flashier.
As for Animated Short, I highly doubt it. Pixar will probably have one or two contenders, and Don Hertzfeldt already seems like an early frontrunner for World of Tomorrow. Hard to see the Frozen spinoff making a dent.March 31, 2015 at 7:04 pm #183252
I think people are underestimating the movie’s potential in Makeup and Hairstyling, especially since there is A LOT of hairstyling on display. The Grand Budapest Hotel basically only had Tilda Swinton’s old-age makeup, and this movie has an impressive scene where Helena Bonham Carter appears as an elderly fairy godmother. Remember Maleficent made the shortlistApril 2, 2015 at 12:06 am #183253
I hope Production Design doesn’t get in and truly don’t see the merit – it’s basic and boring… well that fits the Academy I guess.
But sometimes they choose really inspired and daring films to honor in this category! So I’m expecting Cinderella does not take the place of one of those.
