Dressmaker and Kubo not available to predict but they, along with Handmaiden would be contenders to fill my 5th spot. Along with La La, Fantastic Beasts, Florence, and Jackie which made BFCA, BAFTA, and CDG.January 12, 2017 at 9:44 am #1201986325
No Allied or Love and Friendship…did Silence send screeners?January 12, 2017 at 10:08 am #1201986352

Movie version of a British comedy series from the 90s. A lot of the movie takes place in the fashion world but yeah still a really strange nomination.
The logline may indicate why it appeals to costume and fashion people:
After attracting both media and police attention for accidentally knocking Kate Moss into the River Thames, Edina and Patsy hide out in the south of France.

I thought that The Neon Demon would be the surprise nomination (Amazon, explicitly about fashion, previous nominee for Drive of all things).January 12, 2017 at 12:14 pm #1201986477
To provide some perspective, here’s a list of recent Oscar nominees for costume design that failed to make the guild:
2015: The Revenant
2014: Mr. Turner
2013: The Grandmaster, The Invisible Woman
2010: I Am Love
2009: Bright Star
2007: Across the Universe
2005: Mrs. Henderson Presents, Pride and Prejudice
This is going back to the first year the guild split the Period/Fantasy category.January 12, 2017 at 3:49 pm #1201986645
So is Silence still alive in costumes after missing? I am really worried about tanking my score by keeping it in so many below the line categories.January 12, 2017 at 4:08 pm #1201986656

I think it still has a chance, and in Production Design as well. There have been numerous period films nominated by the Academy’s designers branches that were snubbed at the guilds. I’ve seen Silence and from what I know about the branches’ trends in recent years, its sets and costumes do not look like something they would snub. I think Silence is a much more likely nominee in both categories than Hidden Figures, for instance, which reminds me of The Help in that its sets and costumes scored nominations from both guilds but neither were quite distinctive enough for the Academy compared to other work not nominated by the guild.
