Here are some possible nominees:

Hoyte van Hoytema, “Her”
Phedon Papamichael, “Nebraska”
Rodrigo Prieto, “The Wolf of Wall Street”
Roger Deakins, “Prisoners”
Simon Duggan, “The Great Gatsby”
Barry Ackroyd, “Captain Phillips”
Linus Sandgren, “American Hustle”
Anthony Dod Mantle, “Rush”January 2, 2014 at 3:13 pm #126262Deakins is probably getting in. He is even more popular with them than he is with the Academy. I think those three outsider mentioned are pretty much safe. So we have the last spot. It’s tricky because cinematographers aren’t swayed so much by overall momentum of a particular film, and this is a year where we have a lot of respected names in that world. In the end, I think Papamichael will likely get that last slot simply because of the film being black and white, but Anthony Dod Mantle, Prieto and Hoytema could surprise and take that slot from him.

Also, I love the fact that they nominate the work they like, even if the cinematographer is not well known and his movie is not one of the big contenders of the year like Hoyte van Hoytema for “Tinker Taylor Soldier Spy”.

Since Let The Right One In, many films and DoPs started using his aesthetic. I suspect he could be a surprise nominee again. But I don’t know how much the cinematography on “Her” stands out, as they usually like very flashy work. Which is I keep thinking Dod Mantle will be nommed yet again.

Deakins cinematography is actually the most acclaimed aspect of the film, and everyone I know who has watched really liked his work. Except you, I guess.

@renaton: the cinematography is pretty flashy in Her. As an example, there are a few scenes of Phoenix spinning around energetically, and the camera tracks around him in a whimsical manner. Also, the colors are used very effectively to create a world that is familiar, yet just a little bit off. It doesn’t really look like any other movie I saw this year. It’s hard to articulate because I saw it a few weeks ago, but even those who had a problem with the story couldn’t help but acknowledge the technical mastery involved.

They have a category for contemporary design, so it is a lock to get nominated. It might even win.[/quote]
Oh i didn’t know that……. great!
