I personally feel offended not to see more Oscars under her belt as I find her one of the greatest actresses of all time. She’s among the 8 most nominated women in the history of the Academy Awards and she managed to have her all nominations after the age of 64 – that has to be a record.
I loved her in every single movie – she doesn’t make mistakes and always find the way to impress me.
What was your favorite Oscar-nominated performance by her?
Nominated: 1997 – “Mrs. Brown”
Golden Globe; Bafta
Won: 1998 – “Shakespeare in Love”
Nominated: 2000 – “Chocolat”
Nominated: 2001 – “Iris”
Nominated: 2005 – “Mrs. Henderson Presents”
Nominated: 2006 – “Notes on a Scandal”
Nominated: 2013 – “Philomena”

I did this ranking game this summer for the Best Actress nominees and Dame Judi did well.
I reviewed ten years and three of her performances were considered.
For “Philomena” – 3rd (Blanchett 1st, Bullock 2nd)
For “Notes on a Scandal” – 1st
For “Mrs. Henderson Presents” – 2nd (Huffman 1st)
I think her performance in “Notes on a Scandal” is on my Top 10 Best Performances list and I adored her in the other two movies as well. She was entertaining in “Chocolat”, had a great cameo in “Shakespeare in Love”, and did worthy job in many other films.September 4, 2014 at 5:01 am #160622
I actually really like her performance in Philomena, so heart-breaking
and it’s simply riveting that Philomena is played by the same actress that played Barbara Covett, they are like the exact oppositeSeptember 4, 2014 at 6:06 am #160623
I thought she should have won for “Notes on a Scandal.”September 4, 2014 at 9:25 am #160624
In an ideal world, she would have two Best Actress Oscars for Mrs Brown and Notes on a Scandal instead of her actual one.September 4, 2014 at 10:24 am #160625
I just think she is so terrific in so many of these movies, but I was just stunned by Philomena. She was just so perfect, and considering that I had watched her last as M in Skyfall, it was a hilarious contrast.

When I read she had made no mistakes I thought of The Chronicles of Riddick.
Mrs Brown was excellent.
She probably was 6th for The Shipping News.September 4, 2014 at 2:23 pm #160627
She is clearly an amazing actress. My favorite Oscar-nominated performance of hers is “Notes on a Scandal”. Sad the movie came out in 2006 instead of 2005, because she would have won easily then.September 4, 2014 at 2:31 pm #160628
Well, Dame Judi Dench is thespian royalty. I simply cant brook any criticism or bad comments about her…..and come to think of it, I have never read any post here which has done that.
We all love her and her work. Fair to say?
Favorite Dench Perf: ? A five-way tie? Six?
And btw, I loved her work in Chocolat, and I really like that film. Wanted to cite both for all the grief these comments attract.September 4, 2014 at 4:41 pm #160629
Notes on a Scandal.September 4, 2014 at 9:29 pm #160630
At her worst, she’s class. She should of course have Oscar with Notes On a Scandal engraved on it.September 4, 2014 at 9:43 pm #160631
Her best performance is Notes on a Scandal. She should have won that easily. And Cate should have won the supporting one as well for that film.September 6, 2014 at 6:46 am #160632
No one was better than Dench in Notes on a Scandal in 2006. That year for Oscars was so jacked up in my opinion, with the two lead trophies going to rather sleepy performances, in my opinion.September 6, 2014 at 7:05 am #160633
My pick for 2006 was Penelope Cruz, but Dench definitely deserved to be in second place and very much ahead of Helen Mirren. I saw The Queen recently on cable, it is a good performance, but her name, role, status, recent roles and overdue factor is what gave her that Oscar.
It’s sad because Dench didn’t really win the most deserved Oscar. But at least she ended with a bunch of nominations after that including some very close to one another in years so she wasn’t like one of those “overdue Oscar and done” actors. She showed she could have still won more and gotten more nominations like Skyfall, for example. And I kind of remember her being in the conversation for Pride and Prejudice too, but that was the Mrs Henderson year so…September 6, 2014 at 7:17 am #160634
I am telling you—I recently watched both The Queen and Notes on a Scandal the same day and still cannot believe Dench was not the one who dominated the awards that season. Her performance towers over Mirren’s in my opinion. Mirren is a great actress, but Dench was so much better that year.
