Damien Chazelle is without a doubt the front runner to win best director for La La Land (maybe even original Screenplay) but I just don’t buy it when we got Barry Jenkins for Moonlight in the contest.
If the academy really wants to award people of color this year what a better way to do so than to give An African American the Oscar for directing for the first time ever.
In my opinion Moonlight was the better directing of the two, and what a better way to award Moonlight with this honor. Remember when Ang Lee won for Brokeback Mountain on ’06? I hope I’m right but Chazelle is looking strong. DGA is underway and I hope we get a Iñarritu type of surprise. What are your thought? Who’s your personal favorite?

I cant decide. I like both of their movies, but I am not educated enough about directing to really say, who directed their movie better. However why would the academy want to award a specific ethnicity? I hope they dont choose Barry Jenkins to win for being african-american. If I were a voter and someone would make that argument to me to vote for him, because then we had a first african-american, I wouldnt vote for him. I want the best director to win and voting should not be based on anything other then their directing. Well, I really hope for a tie!!!

While I hate to use the L-word, I do think Chazelle is pretty much a shoo-in to prevail. Jenkins is far likelier to triumph in Screenplay.

No discussion here. Say what you want about each film, but Chazelle made the best “Achievement in Directing” out of the two.

What is an “Iñarritu type of surprise” though? Both times he was very much predicted, locked and the easy winner.

No question to you, please. When will you childish people learn that your opinion isn’t all that matters?

There’s nothing wrong with Bee’s post. It’s pretty clear that she’s just stating her opinion.

Even in Screenplay some are now looking at Hidden Figures after its SAG win – though it has no relevance (between acting and screenplay), they might want to give something to HF. Since Moonlight has already have BSActor in the bag.

When he won for Birdman he wasn’t the locked up contender, it was Richard Linklater, until DGA, that’s when the narrative changed towards Iñarritu which could go on to re occur in the case for Moonlight (not likely, but not impossible either)

This should be Jenkins’s victory outright, but this doesn’t seem like the kind of split year with divided loyalties within the Academy. Voters adored “La La Land” and will reward the man responsible for this in two places. So Chazelle it is for Director and likely Original Screenplay unless Lonergan roars back with some needed momentum.

Maybe the moment posters stop insulting other posters for having a different opinion.

Girl, shut the fuck up. That’s what awards season is and that’s what the forums are for. To spread your opinions. Sorry not everybody is blowing Chazelle like a balloon.

Chazelle has more spectacle and Jenkins has more heart. I want Jenkins and Moonlight to win because it had more of an emotional impact on me; while La La Land I thought looked cool and nothing more.

Looking at the pattern for the past 7 years, the director of the most nominated film tend to win Best Director at the Oscars. So,I think Damien is nearly a lock. But whoever win Dga will win Oscar.
