I’ve just watched a 2006 film entitled “Inside Man” (amazing reviews, good box office performance, AFI Top 10), and I’m quite shocked that Denzel Washington and Jodie Foster have both failed to make the cut for Best Actor and Best Supporting Actress for their stellar work in this film. I know that their performances were not as Oscar-friendly (so no screaming and shouting), but they are both Academy favorites, so it’s a bit weird to see them being snubbed for such great and complex performances.
What do you think?
2/4: Jodie Foster
2/6: Denzel Washington
Always tough to nab Oscar recognition for a Spike Lee picture. That said, I actually consider Inside Man one of Lee’s most safe and least compelling efforts.
OSCAR FLASHBACK: Best Original Song (1986) – The Year That Took Our Breath Away
Well, Denzel had recently won for Training Day and Spike received the Emmy for When the Levees Broke that year or shortly thereafter. He also received the AAFCA Award around the same time.
These factors don’t need to be ‘factors’ of timing and spacing, but so often, they are.
As for Jodie, I’m not sure. But, was anyone going to knock out Jennifer Hudson (06) or, Tilda Swinton (07)?
Regardless, an R-rated film of this nature isn’t exactly Oscar fodder, despite its’ quality.
It was up against The Departed and Scorsese, Whitaker and Hudson; and/or the Coens, Bourne and Day-Lewis, Swinton.
Difficult for a nomination and any win would have probably been out of the question, fair or otherwise.
As I recall, I enjoyed the film quite a bit. But I had forgotten about it until you mentioned it in this thread.
