    Wes Anderson
    David Fincher
    Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu
    Richard Linklater
Christopher Nolan <— (just a hunch. I predict there will be a big surprise with one of the nominees)

Fincher may miss the Oscar nod but he’s safe here. They worship him. He got in for Dragon Tattoo and won for Social Network.

DuVernay, Iñarritu and Linklater seem like the three locks this year (though we said that about Affleck and Bigelow too, so who knows?).

I imagine the final slot will go to either Wes Anderson (Grand Budapest seems to be his breakthrough, his Fargo/Benjamin Button) or one of the newbies like Chazelle or Gilroy. I doubt Angelina’s star power will be enough to get her in here. Tyldum could do it but I think the directors will respond more to the ones I listed above since IG is more about script/performances. If James Marsh gets in it will be a sign of massive (like, insane) strength for Theory of Everything.

David Fincher lost the DGA Award to Tom Hooper. It was one of the strongest sings of the love the industry had for the “The King’s Speech”.

I agree that Richard Linklater, Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu and Ava DuVernay are safe.

Wes Anderson has built a nice body of work and finally has his breakthrough, so he can easily get a nomination here. Then we have David Fincher. DGA voters like him very much even though he lost for projects with big buzz like “The Social Network” and “House of Cards”. They are more likely to nominate a big name directing a hit movie, so he’s probably in.

Morten Tyldum is also a contender because “The Imitation Game” is well liked. He would be the kind of director that gets a DGA nomination and is left out at the Oscars.

A nomination for Angelina Jolie or Damien Chazelle would be surprising (but Chazelle seems like a good bet at the Oscars where the smaller voting body gives smaller movies a better chance).

    ^Thanks for the correction.

I still think he’s safe for a nod here. He’s clearly very well respected by this group, as he should be.

With all the big to do Paramount made about “Selma” being this gem that will knock everyone off their feet, they haven’t been getting it out to the guilds. First the acting, then the producers, and now word on the street is that they didn’t get out the screeners in time to the directors. Right now I have Wes Anderson, David Fincher, Alejandro González Iñárritu, Richard Linklater, and Morten Tyldum with Clint Eastwood being a spoiler.

So it seems Ava DuVernay is no longer in the safe zone with Richard Linklater and Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu. Did “Selma” send screeners or arrange screenings for DGA voters?

I think there are five contenders for the other three slots:
    Ava DuVernay, “Selma”
Wes Anderson, “The Grand Budapest Hotel”
    David Fincher, “Gone Girl”
Morten Tyldum, “The Imitation Game” (if they consider it one of the year’s best movies, they might vote for its director even if they are not familiar with him)
Damien Chazelle, “Whiplash” (small movie but it’s gathered momentum and it can be considered a directing achievement)

Surprises could come from Clint Eastwood (a legend whose status has taken blows in recent years because of his politics and his underwhelming work) or even James Marsh (“The Theory of Everything” continues to surprise but his BAFTA nomination can be explained rather easily because he’s well known to voters in that awards body).
