I think she deserved to be nominated for the 2nd part, especially over her co-star Talia Shire. Thankfully, she eventually won for a great, iconic role and received a couple of nominations since so that eases the blow.

I honestly am not sure if I would nominate her for the first one. I would have to watch it again along with the other nominees.

In such a male dominated film where we have three very deserving men nominated in Supporting and a worthy winner in Lead, the two main women were lost in the praise and shuffle. It doesnt appear that any of the Critics Awards cited her or Talia.

In G2, Coppola’s sister gets the nod. It can be argued, that her nomination was deserved. But, nobody cared about the women. Without them, the emotional heart and what made these monsters ‘human’, could have been lost.

The wonderful Keaton was relatively unknown, with only Lovers and Other Strangers in her filmography (aside from TV work). She and Castellano, and much of the cast are a joy to watch.

I wouldn’t have nominated her for either, but she was much stronger (as a character and an actress) in the second installment.  If there is a weak link in the first, it is her.

I think her performance in both was beyond awful. I really like Keaton, she´s great, but every time I watch those movies I literally can´t understand how she ever won an oscar. Sounds mean, and I´m no hater, it´s just that I find her gut wrenching as kay…

She was better than Shire in the second movie, deserved a nomination.

DIANE KEATON,  one of the most versatile actresses of her generation
has been short changed of acting nominations, especially for THE GODFATHER PART II..

Her “it was an abortion ” scene with Pacino is the high point of acting in that film.
Talia Shire had the advantage of being the director’s sister but Keaton was worthy
of a supporting nomination as well…

Before ANNIE HALL,  her comedic brilliance was showcased well in Love and Death
in 1975…..her performance in REDS is astonsihing, IMO, and she deserved another oscar
    over the “usual” Hepburn performance..

I also wouldve nominated  DIANE KEATON  for Baby Boom in 1987 and Shoot the Moon
    in 1982…

In my book, she is the supporting actress winner in 1974 for THE GODFATHER PART II
over the over rated and over awarded Ingrid bergman…

Miss Keaton should have 2 oscars and 7 nominations
instead of 1 for 4…at least she still has a streak of 4 straight decades nominated
trying to catch the other greats with 5….she does have 1 nomination in every decade
    so far….1977, 1981, 1996 and 2003…..

Maybe they entered Keaton as Lead Actress in the Godfather Part II and thats why Shire got the Supporting Actress nomination?

I’m not saying Shire wasn’t great in Part II (look at the scene when she begs for Freddo) but I thought she had more to work with in the first movie. But I think she 100% deserved her nomination for Rocky.

I don’t think she necessarily deserved a nomination for either Godfather film.

Strangely enough, one of my favorite performances from her is in Baby Boom.

I never liked Keaton in these movies. The character as written gave her nothing to work with. The usual charm she possesses in other movies is absent in the Godfather movies.
