Annette Benning seems to be an actress you either like or dislike. As for me, I think I should see some of her non-nominated work, but out of her Oscar nominations, I think her best roles are American Beauty and The Kids Are All Right. She is terrific and deliciously bitchy in American Beauty and adds a lot of depth and strength to Nic in Kids Are All Right.  I found her to be quite awful in The Grifters and to be completely destroyed by her material in Being Julia.  And to me she is too over the top and theatrical in that as well.

So, what do you think? Do you like her performances? Do you think she was the best in a certain year?

“So, what do you think? Do you like her performances?”

I enjoy watching Annette. She’s a joy imo. I’d have to disagree with you on The Grifters. This is the first time I took notice of her and I loved her jaunty intro.

I took a look at her resume and omg I’ve seen her in everything except, Face of Love. I remember her turn in Wiseguy, which btw was a terrific show which showcased people like Kevin Spacey. Better than it’s grandchild, The Sopranos.

Anyways yes, I like her performances. I was happy to see her in The Kids are All Right. I’d love to see her win and soon. Maybe Warren can direct her to one.

She was great in both, but overshadowed by her costars in Kids are All Right and American Beauty. Spacey deserved his oscar and Moore should have been nominated. Outside of those, I haven’t seen enough of her other work to gauge whether I like her in general.

    Never, not even the runner-up.

    3rd for The Grifters
    3rd for American Beauty
3rd or 4th for Being Julia
5th for The Kids are All Right

If you havent seen Mother and Child, I’d recommend it. I was more ‘moved’ or impressed with Naomi Watts, but Bening, is good. It’s worth it seeing both of these women command the screen.

I just can´t belive/forgive she didn´t win for American Beauty. She was stolen of that oscar. What a brilliant performance…

I wasn’t overly impressed with Natalie Portman like many seemed to be, despite the fact that Black Swan grew on me tremendously in the past couple of years. The 1st hour was kind of slow but the 2nd hour was fantastic.

I would consider giving Annette Bening the win that year for The Kids are All Right, which seemed like such a change of pace for her.

    As for her other nominations:

The Grifters: I actually loved her in this and she would’ve made a very worthy winner, but she is in a tight battle with Bracco and Goldberg. I need to see The Grifters again because it would make my decision either, but for now she is my 2nd place.

American Beauty: Easy 2nd place. She was great in it, but I fully support Hilary Swank’s win here.

Being Julia: Here I don’t support Hilary Swank’s win at all, but I also wasn’t that impressed with Bening. At the time, I really wanted her to win badly but the performance doesn’t hold up. i would probably rank her no higher than 4th here.

Bening was not robbed of the Oscar at all. Swank gave one of the best female performances of the last 25 years in “Boy’s Don’t Cry.”  SHE is the one who would have been robbed if Bening won.

2nd for ‘Kids’. 4th for Being Julia. 4th for American Beauty. 3rd for The Grifters.

Used to not think much of Bening, but her work in ‘Kids’, Mother and Child (if she had been nominate for that instead of ‘Kids’ I would have had her ranked 1st) and Ruby Sparks changed that around.

Never, not much of a fan.  She seems like an uncontrolable stage actress let loose…

3rd for THE GRIFTERS (1st Goldberg)
5th for AMERICAN BEAUTY (1st Swank)
5th for BEING JULIA (1st Winslet)
5th for THE KIDS ARE ALRIGHT (1st Lawrence)

Yes last for American Beauty in that year, even though it’s obvious that character needed to be BIG, BIG, BIG.  I felt she went 10 times bigger than BIG, BIG, BIG.  I guess if I were to watch both that title with MUSIC OF THE HEART back to back I could possibly switch Being & Streep (ducks for lightning strikes) which is my least fav Streep oscar related work.  But more than likely I wouldn’t subject La Streep to such a thing.

This. For some stupid annoying reason, Bening was placed in Lead for Mother and Child (the same year she was also eligible and ultimately nominated for The Kids Are All Right). The few of us that had seen the film went back and forth on which category she should have been in, and I am fully in the Supporting camp. Had she rightfully been placed in Supporting, she would have swept everything (leaving Melissa Leo’s mantle empty; even though Leo would knock it out of the park a few years later in 2013 for Prisoners) and have an Oscar on her mantle. It’s one of her best most heartbreaking performances yet very quiet also. The complete opposite of the films she has been nominated for, for which she was also deserving.

In my bold opinion, I think – going by the voters – she came in 2nd every time she was nominated (even when I disagree; i.e. Winslet should have come in 2nd to Swank for Million Dollar Baby, but it was definitely Bening).

No. But I loved Annette Bening (two n’s in last name, not three) in “Being Julia” (not enough for the win though).

I’m not convinced that Bening was 2nd for Being Julia – Imelda Staunton had won many critics prizes for Vera Drake, which also had directing and writing nominations. Bening was way further from Swank than in 1999-2000, and there was genuine passion for Staunton and her film, which surely would’ve got a BP nom in an expanded category.

Oh and I’m firmly in the Bening-shoulda-won-for-The-Grifters camp.

I’m now adding it to my watch list, hopefully I can find it at my rental store!
