Michelle Pfeiffer is a member of the six-fecta of overdue actresses (Adams, Bening, Close, Moore, Pfeiffer, Weaver).

Did you ever rank her the best?

These are the nominations/wins I would have given her:

1988: Nominated – Best Actress, Married to the Mob
1988: Nominated – Best Supporting Actress, Dangerous Liaisons
1989: Won – Best Actress, The Fabulous Baker Boys
1992: Nominated – Best Supporting Actress, Batman Returns (only because of a shockingly weak field)
1993: Nominated – Best Actress, The Age of Innocence (haven’t seen much of her competition though)
2002: Nominated – Best Supporting Actress, White Oleander
with hopes to nominate and award her many more times in the future

So in total, somewhere between 4 and 6 nominations with 1 win.
Shout outs to her work in Love Field, The Russia House and Hairspray

    Thoughts?

No, never first. But wow what a debut in De Palma’s “Scarface”. I think she outshines everyone here, including boisterous Pacino. Supporting was an incredible field that year but I’d have no problem dropping Close for Michelle.

    She’s terrific in everything imo.

Pfeiffer and Close should have won for Liaisons.

Easily for The Fabulous Baker Boys.

^This! Malkovich is a bit shaky for me in the 2nd half but Pfeiffer is heart-breaking and Close is a revelation, even better than in Fatal Attraction.

Funny this thread should come up as I just watched The Fabulous Baker Boys today. Pfeiffer is certainly Oscar worthy, but I actually haven’t seen Driving Miss Daisy. Pfeiffer swept the critics awards that year though, and it’s probably her best performance. Amazing star quality yet grounded in emotional reality. And the Bridges bros are great too, as well as Michael Ballhaus’s lush cinematography.

She should’ve obviously won for The Fabulous Baker Boys.

I’m not a huge fan of her as an actress tbh, but I think her turn in Batman Returns is the best performance ever in a superhero movie, second only (maybe) to Heath Ledger, who I still believe is a tad overrated in The Dark Knight. So I would’ve nominated her for that too.

She’s brilliant in that movie. That party scene with Michael Keaton is outstanding.

Yes, she was, by far, the best in 89. Her loss that year is ridiculous

Well, I’ve seen the fabulous Baker Boys just recently and though she was deserving of the nom, all critical acclaim she got and she sang wonderful, I felt hardly anything for her character. Maybe I expected more or too much, but I can see why the Academy went with Tandy that year.
But she’s a great actress and I’m still shocked why she was not nominated for The Age of Innocence or White Orleander.
Batman Returns will always be my favorite performance of hers and that’s the year I’d have definitely rank her the first if she had been nominated. Sadly she wasn’t.

So happy to see so many people love her performance in Batman Returns! That’s my favorite performance ever in a film, it’s just so mindblowing! She did 3 characters in just one film, the secretary Selina Kyle, the dead/new Selina Kyle and Catwoman.

Tandy’s win started a trend. After her every Best Makeup win that had a Best Actress nomination they also won the category too. Marion Cotillard and Meryl Streep.

She saves this movie for me.

    Mee-ow.

ETA: I’ll mention Married to the Mob. I may have preferred her in this over her more popular perfs.

I remember a funny quote I read once: ‘Unless Jessica Tandy is 20 and Morgan Freeman is white there is no reason why this should’ve won the makeup award over Baron Munchausen.’
