How is the film in terms of that issue?

I’m not too familiar with the rumors. Having seen the film, I will say that there are the subtlest of undertones, but nothing concrete. You could read a gay subtext into it, or you could just as easily not.

If Carrell wins it would be the second year in a row Best Actor went to a de-gayed character.

I read no gay subtext into the film.  Now that you mention it, I could see how you could find the subtlest of undertones, but I cannot imagine that that was a conscious decision.

I don’t understand this comment, can you clarify what you mean?

Carell has stiff competition this year with Michael Keaton and Eddie Redmayne. That being said, what gay rumors/incidents are you referring to?

I dunno. I think it was quite obvious during the scene where John wakes up Mark to “practice” and we get that floor shot. But other than that you’re right, pretty subtle if anything.

A better question is why does this warrant its own thread? This question could easily have gone into the “Foxcatcher” thread and been answered just the same.

A lot of topics worth discussing can get lost in the all-encompassing official threads for movies and TV shows. I don’t see any reason not to have a specific thread about this topic if people would like to discuss it.

That’s a load. I’ve seen several topics closed and shooed away into its respective thread. This was a yes/no question which was answered by you, chow, and myself (all having seen the film) and not much discussion past that. I’m just saying, be fair, not selective.

The trailer does reveal some slight erotic tension coming from Carell’s character towards Tatum’s but it’s so subtle that you can easily miss it. There isn’t a romantic subtext to it (I think – I still haven’t seen the movie, sadly), it’s just a bizarre and disturbing kind of dependency that DuPont has grown towards Mark. But I can be wrong.

I try to close threads when I can, but it did not occur to me with this one for some reason, perhaps because Daniel had already commented. I agree in hindsight that this question should have been kept to the official film thread, especially since it can only be answered by those who have seen Foxcatcher.

I don’t know, it’s like… a question of common sense? Do really people want to be protagonists all the time?

The character Matthew M. won for last year in Dallas Buyer’s Club was vehemently heterosexual in the film yet people who actually knew the guy said he had “relations” with men also.

The character Carrell plays was also thought by many who knew him to be a repressed gay man.

(I think Tom discussed this in a podcast somewhere)

^Ok, I always thought the Woodroof thing was just a rumour but I’m not sure about the Foxcatcher story. I also need to see the film to see how it is dealt with. As I understand it, Ron Woodroof’s family was heavily involved in the production of DBC, and likely asked that that aspect be kept out of the film, but I’m not sure if any such limitation is put on Foxcatcher.
