So I’m predicting Gravity to win, and as such I’m pouring over every possible reason why it loses so as to feel more stable.

I was looking at the techs and saying “well is it a sure thing for score? Sound mixing? Editing?” It did just lose to Captain Phillips.

But THEN I thought, does it have to win every tech to get best picture? It is doubtlessly popular. If the oscars does decide to spread the wealth will it hurt Gravity?

Can Gravity win with picture, director, and just 4 techs? 3?  dare I say it…2?

If Gravity wins Best Picture it could well end up winning 9 awards: Picture, Direction, Cinematography, Production Design, Sound Mixing and Editing, Editing, Visual Effects and Score. If it loses Best Picture it’s still 8. In such a competitive year this seems too much for me. My guess is that it loses a few techs before winning (or losing Best Pic).

    Gravity is strong in:

    • Cinematography (locked)
    • Visual effects (mortal lock)
    • Sound Mixing (mortal lock)
    • Sound Editing (mortal lock)

Gravity is not so strong in:

    • Production Design (my guess is that it ultimately wins this cathegory against all odds ala Lincoln)
    • Original Score (this is the “too much” cathegory for Gravity. I don’t see academy members rewarding Steven Price. They tend to give electronic/pop/sometimes-bad-scores the award when it’s a consolation prize: Brokeback Mountain, Babel, The Social Network). My guess is that they spread the wealth here: The Oscar goes to Philomena or Saving Mr. Banks.
    • Editing: I don’t see Gravity winning here. Captain Phillips is the winner here (ala Girl with the Dragon Tatoo, The Matrix or The Bourne Ultimatum).

So Gravity winning 5 or 6 awards seems more real to me. 12 years winning 2 or 3 (Pic, Supporting Actress, Adapted Screenplay or even Production Design).

^This is about right, I’m slightly less sure about Sound Mixing. They often get grouped together, but they are completely different, and Gravity’s Sound Editing is considerably stronger than the mixing.

In a perfect world, Gravity will win diddly squat.
