With Tom Hanks as this year’s possibility of double nominations and Best Actress frontrunner Cate Blanchett being the most recent one (2007), who do you think was in the running for double nods in the past but ended up only with 1 (or none)? Would you consider them deserving?

    Kate Winslet:
    LA – Revolutionary Road
    SA – The Reader
It easily could have happened. As “The Reader” got into Lead Actress, at least voters were not confused and there was no vote splitting.

    Meryl Streep – twice:
    LA – Kramer vs. Kramer
    SA – Manhattan
Slightly similar situation. She became a lock when the nominations came out (or so I heard).
    and…
    LA – The Hours
    SA – Adaptation
She didn’t get in for “The Hours” which is a shame but at least the line-up was really good and Hayek & Lane got their moment in the sun.

    Brad Pitt:
    LA – Moneyball
SA – The Tree of Life
I still wonder why “Tree…” didn’t get recognition for its stellar acting.

^^Totally! He would be probably the first one to be nominated thrice for playing the same character.

I wouldn’t have supported this one but considering his SAG nomination:

    Leonardo DiCaprio – 2006
    Lead: Blood Diamond
    Sup Actor: The Departed

I would have had no problem with Meryl Streep being nominated for The Hours and Adaptation, her two best performances in the last 15 years in a significant banner year, setting her up for a career resurgence and peak commercial success in the past decade.  Meryl has said Adaptation is the best script she’s ever read, and she was dynamite in that part as well as in The Hours, which contained some emotionally devastating scenes.  I love the moment she shares with Claire Danes, saying “It WAS happiness.”

    Michael Fassbender – 2011
    LA – Shame
    SA – X-Men: First Class

Yeah kind of an oddball one. Still, though.

I’m probably going with more of a left-field choice here, but Nick Nolte earned a Best Actor nomination for Affliction the same year that The Thin Red Line came out, and I thought that he would have made an absolutely marvelous Supporting Actor contender for the latter. He was a real highlight for me.

I love Meryl but come on let’s be objective here she was never going to get in for Lead Actress for The Hours.

    I second this.

Agree!! TTRL should have dominated the supporting actor category that year.

I have always been objective about Meryl on this site, speaking out and offering criticism.  Isn’t the point of this entire topic to be speculative?  I bet money she just missed out being nominated for The Hours, very likely coming in sixth place.  That puts her in a much more likely position than most if not all of the other suggestions here.

Another off-the-wall mention, this time a bit more populist.

    Robert Downey, Jr – 2008:

    Lead: Iron Man
    Supporting: Tropic Thunder
