The trailer of Exodus Gods and Kings has me convinced the film is going to do much better than is currently being predicted in all of the technical categories at this year’s Oscars. I don’t like biblical epics, and disliked Scott’s Gladiator (which won Best Picture), and I have no idea if the script, direction, and acting are any good, but simply based on the visual splendor of the trailer, I think Exodus Gods and Kings has strong potential in 8 categories: Cinematography; Production Design; Film Editing; Sound Editing; Sound Mixing; Score; Costume Design; and Visual Effects. (It’s possible it could be a Best Picture and/or Best Director nominee as well, but this seems less likely). For some reason, Interstellar is still being touted as a potential winner (I don’t understand why it will even be nominated in any categories; I hated it that much and every single aspect of it, esp. it’s poor sets and visual effects – snark away, it’s only my opinion!) It will be interesting if I feel the same way about Exodus Gods and Kings when I see the film in its entirety! (It’s been known to happen: a great trailer and the movie is terrible, and vice-versa too).
I’m glad someone else is with me on this, because I’m really surprised I’m rocking a 100/1 prediction for Exodus in Production Design. Just from the trailer I was more impressed than in the entire runtime of Maleficent.
I think for the other categories, it’s a little more difficult for it to gain traction, especially cinematography, score, editing and VFX. I could see sound editing, but not mixing, and costumes will really depend on how important it is to the plot. The costume guild doesn’t usually care for Ancient Egypt, as much as the 18th century everywhere.

I feel like it will get nominations for Costumes, Production Design, and maybe Visuals. That big wave scene looks amazing.
Look at the visual effects from Exodus (shitty CGI) and then the effects from Interstellar (amazing practical work) and realize you’re an idiot.
Exodus could gain technical traction, but if it sucks and everyone hates it, don’t be surprised if it gets no nominations at all.
The commercial kinda shows what I assume is the Red Sea crossing and if it is, it looks AWESOME.
