Here’s our latest tally of the updated predix of the expert Oscarologists polled by Gold Derby. ‘Les Miz’ just leapt out front —

I’d really love to know where this Les Miz buzz is coming from? Besides the play/story people all know, virtually a soul hasn’t seen this film yet.

Amen. This stuff is so ridiculous. NO ONE HAS SEEN THE FILM and yet it pulls ahead as the probably Best Picture winner? Sure it might end up being amazing, but predictions based on films no one has seen is just silly.

I think Tom and his ‘experts’ are right. And the film opening (wide) will just, increase the mania. Lol.

This could be a case where, many of the winners are winners long before the season ends.

I cant believe I’m saying this either, since, I’m usually one who waits to ‘see’ by the 11th hour.

I think “Argo” is peaking at the wrong time, and this will probably hurt Affleck’s chances for a Best Director nomination. Right now, he seems like a lock, but this is a moment where most films are still sight unseen or very few people watched them. I think considering the tone of his film is sorta lighter than most of contenders that have yet to be seen, when people compare Affleck’s achievement to director’s with dedicated followings whose films will feel fresher in people’s minds, there’s a chance he might get lost among all those names, and the film gets a nomination, but not him.

And I honestly don’t see it winning Best Picture yet.  I actually think it will have trouble winning the guilds (I don’t see it pulling off a win from DGA or WGA, for example), and I believe that as acclaimed as it is right now, it won’t sweep the critics awards as there will be “The Master”, “Amour” and many other late year releases to divide the field a little bit this time. It will probably get a Best Picture nomination, but I don’t see it becoming this awards season juggernaut many seem to think it will be.

Affleck’s first two directorial efforts were excruciating.

Of course, the Academy has voted for hacks before. It voted for Ron Howard. Over David Lynch. Peter Jackson. Ridley Scott. And Robert Altman!
