Ok, so what about this movie? The Harry Potter series got some nominations.

How do you guys see this one? Pordution Design and Costume Design looks stunning, but how about Original Screenplay?

    Discuss.

I don’t think Original Screenplay is a high possibilty. Rowling’s great, but she’s never written a screenplay before. Not to completely rule it out, but I don’t think this is that kind of movie.

On the other hand, this looks like a strong contender in Costume, Production Design, Visual Effects, and maybe even Score.

This will now be a five-film series. The book was 128 pages and it was previously set to be a trilogy. The first movie is 140 minutes. This is worse than The Hobbit.

IT is not. They will use Newt as a figure playing out in the Dumbledore – Grindewalt war. This can actually be quite amazing.

To be fair, the book is pretty irrelevant here as it has absolutely zero plot and was only intended as a fan item, mock-up of the text book that the students have in the HP series.

Still think 5 films is unnecessary though. Maybe they are trying to bridge a ten year gap to when they can bring out Cursed Childs with the 3 leads now suitable age?

I can see this one scooping up a handful of tech nods come Oscar morning.

^ I only see it having a chance in Costumes, Production Design and Visual Effects.

Yeah, it’s not like, say, The Theory of Everything is an adaptation of A Brief History of Time. Or Kinsey is an adaptation of Sexual Behavior in the Human Male.

    Happy and ready for this!

Seeing as how it’s been snubbed for absolutely every consideration…aside from Cinematography, Art Direction, VE, Costume Design, Makeup, Score, for which they’ve never won I’m going to take a leap and say,

    that’s about to change baby…..

The first snippet of a reaction on Twitter:

Peter Bradshaw – Fantastic Beasts is just that. Fantastic.

Please don’t think of me as a homophobe or anything, but why are they considering making Dumbledore gay in the sequel? I mean, it’s kinda unneeded.

Because Dumbledore IS gay. Rowling stated this years ago. To not acknowledge this aspect of his life, yet happily show heterosexual relationships in this film series, would be wrong.

It wouldn’t be ‘unneeded’ to show him with a wife and kids, would it?

The Harry Potter-verse remains the single film franchise with the most Oscar nominations and not a single actual win.  Against the likes of PEREGRINE (Production Design), ROGUE (VFX) and ST BEYOND (Makeup)–among others–I don’t see that likely to change this year.

Full reviews are in. Overall, it’s getting slightly mixed to really positive reactions.

It includes 5 stars from The Guardian, and 4 stars from The Telegraph. British critics seeming to like this more than International ones.
