Out of curiosity, what’s your favorite Oscar-nominated Marlon Brando role?

Streetcar, though I actually have a real soft spot for his work in Sayonara.

Here’s an even more interesting question I have for everyone, because we could have a field day with this. Which of Brando’s performances that were not nominated for Oscars that you think should have been nominated? For me, it’s easily Apocalypse Now. I honestly think Brando should have won his third Oscar for that film, regardless of how he felt about the award itself. Watching him in that movie always sends chills down my spine, especially considering how he pretty much made up Colonel Kurtz’s entire monologue on the spot. In fact, I consider Brando’s performance in Apocalypse Now to be the greatest performance snub in Oscar history.

On the Waterfront is his shining moment and the greatest performance of all time. Brando should have won for A Streetcar Named Desire though. He should have also been nominated for Apocalypse Now.

On the Waterfront: His best performance, but not my favourite.
Apocalypse Now (not even mentioned but should have been even though he wasn’t nominated): My favourite performance.
A Streetcar Named Desire: My favourite Oscar nominated performance from him.

IMO, Brando’s three strongest performances in the poll were Streetcar, Waterfront, and Godfather. Waterfront edges out the other two, but not by much. The missing role of note is Apocalypse Now, but had he been nominated, it would have been for Best Supporting Actor, displacing Robert Duvall. I don’t see how it would have been possible to nominate Brando for Best Actor in Apocalypse with Martin Sheen unquestionably having the leading role.

Brando’s final Oscar nomination for A Dry White Season was for Best Supporting Actor.
