What actors gave your favorite breakthrough performances of 2016 and why?

One of the obvious ones is probably Mahershala Ali in “Moonlight.” He’s been working for a while but that performance obviously has put him on the map in a big way. But I think I’d put most of his co-stars right up there with him: Janelle Monae, Naomie Harris, Trevante Rhodes, Alex R. Hibbert, and my personal favorite performance from the film, Ashton Sanders.

Slightly less obvious, I thought Parker Sawyers nailed the unenviable challenge of playing President Obama as a young man, and doing so credibly and without it feeling like a labored impression.

I also loved Ruth Negga (“Loving”), Sandra Huller (“Toni Erdmann”), Jovan Adepo (“Fences”), and a bunch more.

    Sandra Huller

Not a breakthrough performance at all. Do yourself a favor and go watch her previous works. She’s consistently fantastic and has been recognized quite often as such by the European film community and criticism.

I just saw American Honey. Sasha Lane is really impressive.

I concur re: Rhodes, Negga and Adepo and would add Harvey Scrimshaw in The Witch and Gillian Jacobs in Don’t Think Twice.

    Devon Terrell in Barry.

He is just sublime. That’s an actor to watch out for.

    Ashton Sanders all the way!

I have yet to see “Barry” but it is sitting atop my Netflix queue waiting for me to stream it.

This may seem strange and not make sense to you all, but Blake Lively in the Shallows. She proved she could carry a movie extremely well and I can see such a bright actress in her.

Lucas Hedges was the obvious breakout from this year, but Alex R Hibbert’s first performance in Moonlight is just brilliant, and Anya Taylor-Joy was terrific to watch in The Witch.

I hope all the praise for Ashton Sanders I see on these fourms translate to a Best Supporting Actor nomination at the Gold Derby Film Awards!

And while I do love Ashton Sanders and Lucas Hedges, one who has not been singled out by anybody is Blake Jenner.

Everybody Wants Some and Edge of Seventeen gave him great range, and he should be celebrating a Golden Globe nod right now. Hope he continues to get the chance to shine.
