One of my favorite parts of Oscar season is seeing which young performers will become the Oscar standards in the future. This year had several great performances by millennials:
Timothee Chalamet-obviously great as Elio but also very funny as a douchebag in Lady Bird; also a tiny indie movie called Miss Stevens y’all should check out. Overall it’s meh but he’s really the scene stealer. Never takes himself too seriously and I like that a lot.
Saoirse Ronan-I actually think she was a bit overrated in Lady Bird but as Eilis in Brooklyn she gives one of my favorite female performances of the last few years
Lucas Hedges-so, so enjoyed him in Manchester by the Sea last year and thought he did solid supporting work this year as well. Definitely looking forward to Boy, Erased
Beanie Feldstein-almost felt like she was stealing scenes from Saoirse in Lady Bird.
Daniel Kaluuya-I think his performance in Get Out was probably 100 hundred times harder than he’s getting credit for. There are so many ways he could’ve played it over the top and he never hit a false note
Caleb Landry Jones-one of the breakouts of the year, great in Three Billboards especially
What are some of your favorite performances from millennials this year or in the past few years? Who do you think has potential for bright careers?
Timothee Chalamet is definitely an all time great, and so is Saoirse Ronan in both Brooklyn and Atonement. Jacob Tremblay was great too. Also under 30 this year, Margot Robbie, Jennifer Lawrence, Bria Vinaite, and Barry Keoghan are all oscar worthy to me.
Also, this one is tv, but Kiernan Shipka on Mad Men is one of the best performances from a child actor in recent memory. I definitely think she could have a breakout film role soon.
