Which films did you cite most often on your ideal ballot? Did you find yourself leaving some of your favorites off your ballot in order to vote strategically and give some longer shots a better chance?

    # of times on my ballot:  I listed the films I voted for at least twice.

    Brooklyn — 11
Mad Max: Fury Road  — 10
Far From the Madding Crowd — 7
    Ex Machina — 6
Beasts of No Nation — 4
    The Martian — 3
    Room — 2
    Joy — 2
    Inside Out — 2
When Marnie Was There — 2

Films still on my watchlist that could change things by the time voting ends: 99 Homes, The Lobster, 45 Years, Anomalisa, Carol, The Revenant, The Hateful Eight.

Room- 12 (including Breakthrough Performance: Jacob Tremblay)
    Mad Max: Fury Road- 9
    The Martian- 6
    Inside Out- 5
    Joy- 5
    Cinderella- 4
    Spy- 4
Straight Outta Compton- 4 (including Breakthrough Performance: Jason Mitchell)
Far From the Madding Crowd- 3
    Ex Machina- 2
    Pan- 2
    The Peanuts Movie- 2
Tomorrowland- 2 (including Breakthrough Performance: Britt Robertson)

If Spy was available for Original Screenplay (now it is), it would have 4 instead of 3 (changed). I’m surprised I nominated Room the most, great movie and it’s in my top 5 of the year but at number 5. I need to catch up on a fuck-ton of stuff.

    8 – The Danish Girl
    6 – Creed
    6 – Room
    6 – Spotlight
    6 – Trumbo
    5 – The Big Short
    5 – The Martian
    4- Love & Mercy
    3 – The Hateful Eight
    2- Brooklyn

The Danish Girl got the most because I have it in my top 3 for Costumes, Makeup & Hair, Score, and Production Design – along with BP, Actor, Actress, and Breathrough performer

Creed got only technical citations: Cinematography, Film Editing, Makeup & Hair (for its makeup!), Score, Song and Sound

Room has BP, Actor, Actress, Director, Adapted Screenplay and Breathrough performer

Spotlight got BP, Director, Supporting Actor, Supporting Actress, Original Screenplay, Ensemble

Trumbo got BP, Actor, Ensemble, Adapted Screenplay, Costumes, and Production Design (and I will add Supporting Actress once Diane Lane is on the list of potential nominees)

The Big Short got BP, Director, Ensemble, Adapted Screenplay, and Film Editing

The Martian got only technical citations: Cinematography, Film Editing, Production Design, Sound, and Visual Effects

I don’t like The Hateful Eight, but gave it 3 citations for it’s Cinematography, Makeup & Hair, and Score

The Martian wins 4, Room wins 3, Trumbo, Brooklyn, and The Danish Girl wins 2, and 1 each for Love & Mercy, Spotlight, Creed, The Hateful Eight, Spectre, and Inside Out

Mad Max for me. I don’t know if any other movie would’ve gotten that much, my next film is The Revenant. But who knows, if it weren’t for the ridiculous fact that you can only list 3 nominees in everything but BP maybe something else could’ve gotten ahead.

Listing only three is great.  People are not actually that dilligent about watching movies, so people with high visibility gain an unfair advantage the more slots that people have to fill.  Did you see the travesty that resulted from temporarily switching to an expanded ballot in the Gold Derby TV Awards?

I haven’t finished voting. Also I’m mad I can’t vote for Ex Machina in Original Score, so that should be at 8.
