This wouldn’t be worth a thread except we devoted a lot of time for this years ago.

Halle Berry’s Golden Globe nominated Frankie & Alice, which qualified for 2010 awards despite being in legal dispute, is finally opening beyond its qualifying run on 4/4. Its distributor is Code Black, a partner of Lionsgate. There are already TV spots  being run.

This is certainly an innovative way to distribute a movie.

It’s similar to Blue Skies, made by Orion, which went bankrupt, and had its assets sold years later to MGM, which then released the film 4 years after it was made. The difference here is that the creditors allowed F&A to qualify for awards in 2010 in the hopes that it would jump start its chances. In this case, its eligibility has already come and gone.

I found out about this in a very weird way weeks ago. Since it was nominated for that Globe I thought it had been released already.

Anyway, if you haven’t seen it, don’t. It’s nothing special and Berry didn’t deserve any awards consideration for this.

Have there been any other major Globe nominees to take years and years to finally get an actual release?

I actually thought this was a very strong performance by Halle Berry.  the movie itself isn’t great, but her performance was good.  This was an opportunity to tell a great story about mental illness in the black community.

can it qualify for any awards this year?

None that base eligibility on LA opening.

This will be the first time it opens in NY, so though extremely unlikely, would be eligible for those based there

I look forward to seeing this. Stories about mental illness in the black community are rarely told.

I forgot about this film. I didnt care for it at all. Halle is usually good, and she’s no exception here, but I wish she had passed on this project.

This movie would have never existed if it weren’t for Berry and her desperate reach towards a second Oscar.

This movie wasn’t the worse thing ever, and that’s all I can say about it.

Weird how this was nominated back in 2010 and only NOW it’s getting released.

Weird but explained by the fact that the film was held by creditors who never got paid for their services on the film. Clearly some arrangement has been made to allow it to finally be released. Remember Lionsgate has a relation with Berry from Monster’s Ball.

Halle was outstanding in it. I guess its personal opinion but she is not the only star desparate for Oscar.  Would have did outstanding at the Emmy’s.

A similar case was Stevie in 1978.

It was released in LA and Glenda Jackson got a Globe nom and Mona Washbourne won supporting actress at the Globes and she also won LA Critics and a BAFTA nom. The film wasn’t released in New York until 1981 and both women won NY Critics and Washbourne placed 2nd for National Society and won Boston.
