Might be a tad early (though I do want to equal my early-bird with Boyhood rep) as this film is only supposed to be released in March 2016 (which is odd as it’s still filming and obviously Oscar bait), but Time had this bit about it today. Gugu Mbatha-Raw plays Newton Knight’s second wife Rachel and Keri Russell plays his spurned first wife Serena.

He’s basically your Civil War boyfriend
For an actor, there’s no better awards bait than an appearance-transforming role in a biographical war movie. World, meet The Free State of Jones.
Matthew McConaughey will star in the action-drama as Newt Knight, a Mississippi farmer who led a southern rebellion against the Confederates during the Civil War. He and his followers “seceded” from the Confederacy, calling Jones County “The Free State of Jones.” After the war, he distinguished himself from fellow southerners once again by marrying a former slave named Rachel.
The movie is directed by Gary Ross (Seabiscuit, The Hunger Games) and will hit theaters March 11, 2016.

This could be a laughable disaster.April 21, 2015 at 1:33 pm #185627
This could be a laughable disaster.
Of course you’d think so as you never cease to tell us how much you loathe McConaughey! The story of Newton Knight is fascinating and largely unknown. Gary Ross certainly did a better job adapting Seabiscuit than Jolie did with Unbroken, he has a good feel for period.April 21, 2015 at 1:49 pm #185628

Matthew so desperately wants to become an Academy perennial with multiple acting nominations and a shot at another win. Boy boo. Nobody cares you’re a one and done wonder.June 23, 2016 at 12:16 pm #1201855613
Poor Gugu. I hope it’s not a complete box office bomb.June 23, 2016 at 6:15 pm #1201855788

I really want to see this movie but from the EW review I’m a bit worried.June 25, 2016 at 10:48 am #1201856704
Ok so I saw this in the morning (because the prices are cheaper before noon lol) and honestly I was impressed by parts of it but mostly let down by the movie as a whole. It felt like a History Channel Movie but with a slightly better script. Saying that, Matthew Mc. was great in it so there is a silver lining there. Also, underuse of Kerri Russell is a crime but it has happened. My grade: C+
