Color me surprised to say the least, never thought they would go like this. Apparently Frozen, so obviously adapted from Hans Christian Andersen’s “The Snow Queen” and Monsters University, so obviously adapted from the characters created by Pete Docter, John Lasseter and company are submitting in the Original Screenplay category.

…and with that, the Best Adapted Screenplay has got that much less competitive.

Per Academy rules, the writers’ branch will determine what is original and what is adapted. I am confident these will both end up in the adapted category for consideration. Disney has zero say in the issue other than presenting their preference to the Academy.

Agreed. There’s no way either will be considered for anything other than adapted.

If Before Sunset is considered Adapted, then Monsters University should too.

They can’t seriously hope to run with this for Monsters University when Toy Story 3 already set a precedent, can they?

Agreed. It’s weird how Toy Story 3 was nominated in Adapted and it was so obviously a sequel, and yet they expect Monsters University and Frozen, a sequel and a fairy tale to be Original? My “bullshit-o-meter” is going crazy!

The difference of course is that Monsters University is a prequel. It’s still BS, but there is a difference.

+1.  Frozen is so much different from the original Andersen work that they MIGHT get by with it, but there’s NO way you can claim Mike & Sulley didn’t exist before — even though Pixar conveniently ignored the line from MI that they met in grade school (they said “Monsters Elementary” wouldn’t work).
