While I am thrilled that Inside Out is a current frontrunner for Best Animated Feature and could get nominated for Best Picture, I would also love to see some love for Amy Poehler’s voice work. While acting on screen can be pretty difficult, to me, it is even more difficult to create a complex characterization with just the use of your voice and Poehler certainly accomplishes that task as Joy. While Poehler is able to play off her sunny Leslie Knope persona in Parks and Recreation, she is still able to pull off Joy’s emotional dramatic arc (no pun intended), slowly realizing that she can’t always keep Riley happy, with incredible nuance.

What do you guys think? Do you think voters should really listen and take note of Amy Poehler’s voice work? Let’s discuss.

if Degeneres couldn’t get in for Finding Nemo (despite serious for your consideration buzz) and Johansson couldn’t get in for Her, Poehler has no shot in hell for even a GG nom for this. we are light years ahead from voiceover work getting considered for acting awards.

Voice-over performances will never be nominated for acting Oscars. Ever.

    Do I want this? YES!
    Will it happen? Nope.

If Eddie Murphy, Ellen, ScarJo, and other amazing voice-over performances before couldn’t make it, including others in Inside Out, then it will not happen.

You can FYC it for the Tyler’s Choice Awards (my awards) if that’s any consolation.

Though also, Eddie Murphy did get a BAFTA for his performance in Shrek. So if the BAFTAs are REALLY passionate about Inside Out, then… maybe?

Only when actual actors are replaced 100% by computer-designed characters we can start talking about voice-over performances being nominated. We are still several years from that happening.

I actually thought Phyllis Smith as Sadness gave the best voice performance in that film, but I seem to be one of the only ones. Obviously neither will, but Smith would get my FYC. She might even get in my personal rankings.

People should stop comparing voice-over performances to actual performances. It’s not the same. Voice is an important thing, but that’s just one element of acting. You can have an interesting voice and make an animation character special, but it does not make you a good actor.

I’m sure Poehler will be nominated for the Annie Awards..,

It’s nice to see such support for Amy and our favorites but no. Just no. It’s not that she isnt ‘good’ in Inside Out. But really.

    No.

I’m not even sure it can get in for Best Picture. Anything it can get, I’ll be happy, but this is a HUGE stretch. I would think a SAG ensemble nomination would be more plausible, though still unlikely.

I’m a big supporter of mo cap performances getting recognized, but this is a little different, as a large portion of the performance comes from the animators, not the actors. It was different too with Scarlett Johansson in Her because that character was voice only so the performance was 100% hers. Still I can’t say I’d never support a nom for voice acting for an animated film, Robin Williams in Aladdin comes to mind. But I don’t know if Poehler is worthy here.
