So, I had just seen the film Dope, which scored strong buzz out of Sundance, and after seeing it and liking it, I think it provides a strong case for a Best Film Editing nomination at the Oscars.
What was so unique about the editing is how editor Lee Haugen incorporates different techniques like split screen, sudden pauses, breaking the fourth wall, etc., that give the film quite a bit of slickness and even a Scorsese vibe without ever replicating Scorsese.
The film even won a Jury Prize at Sundance for Best Editing, so that’s one accolade it already collected. If you have seen the film agree or disagree that this deserves an Editing nomination or think it deserves recognition in other categories as well?
I think it only deserves a song nomination
I too thought that the editing was well used, and uniquely so. There’s lots of interesting techniques used, but they work incredibly well. I too liked the original songs Kyle, but I also hope the screenplay gets some attention. I thought it was very funny with some interesting characters and a fun, crazy plot that keeps things fresh and interesting.
