Hello, Derbyites, I have created another piece of doomed optimism, ehr…I mean, For Your Consideration post. After seeing the amazing tense thriller The Gift, while I thought Jason Bateman and Joel Edgerton were phenomenal in their roles, it is Rebecca Hall who was the MVP. Hall is very three-dimensional as Robyn, the skeptical wife who tries to see the good in Joel Edgerton’s character despite being a little too interested in being involved in the lives of her and her husband while at the same time, she is weary of her husband’s motivations and troubling past. She has a steely reserve yet is also meek and vulnerable and all those traits make her very human.
It isn’t a very showy “actress-y” performance as Hall silently captures the rampant emotions her character goes through with just the use of her eyes. But Hall brings us a refreshing face to the suspense genre and I think her work should be greatly rewarded. She has yet to join the Oscar club and a nomination would shine a light on one of our most underrated actresses.
If you have seen the film, what do you guys think? Do you think her work in this is worthy of awards buzz? Let’s discuss.
I would support a nomination at this point, based on the fifty-three 2015 releases that I have seen so far. She has the same problem as Brie Larson, who is prominent in the first two thirds or so of the movie, but disappears toward the end as the focus shifts away from her.
