So, I just got through seeing Spy and I figured I’d post another FYC thread for another performance that seems outside the box, but is worthy of awards consideration. While I thought Melissa McCarthy was hilarious in her usual form, one actress that I thought really stole the scenery was Rose Byrne as the main villain Rayna. I thought she had such excellent comedic timing (which is far more difficult than being dramatic) with her deadpan delivery and occasional hysterical fits that had me laughing my butt off. If Melissa McCarthy can get nominated in the same category for Bridesmaids, who says the same can’t happen with Rose Byrne, right? Who’s with me?June 5, 2015 at 2:55 pm #188128
I’m with you. She is the MVP in my opinion, and she absolutely KILLS. Every single scene with her is elevated by her comedic timing and screen presence. Even McCarthy’s best scenes are the ones opposite her.June 5, 2015 at 3:28 pm #188129
Let’s be real: the only time when I laughed out loud with the “Spy” trailer was when she said to McCarthy “you’re delightful” in such a sweet/crazy/chic/funny way. Love that woman to death.June 5, 2015 at 4:36 pm #188130
I would totally support this. So far, she is my personal winnerJune 5, 2015 at 4:39 pm #188131
Rose Byrne is really becoming a favourite of mine. Since her standout performance in Neighbors, I am now kinda becoming a fan of hers. Most underrated funniest actress alive today?June 5, 2015 at 10:00 pm #188132
STOLE. THE. SHOW. Couldn’t agree more with this!June 5, 2015 at 11:41 pm #188133
Totally agree! I thought she was hysterical! I loved Rose since Damages so I’m happy she’s starting to become a household nameJune 6, 2015 at 12:02 am #188134
I love Rose. She’s amazing. I want both women to happen. McCarthy in lead, Bryne in supporting. Why not? Time to change Academy.June 6, 2015 at 1:51 am #188135
I loved her performance and am completely behind the idea of her getting nominated. The scene with her and McCarthy on the plane alone is enough for me to want her nominated.June 6, 2015 at 3:07 am #188136
I thought she should have got the nom for Bridesmaids instead of McCarthy.June 6, 2015 at 3:39 am #188137
I thought she should have got the nom for Bridesmaids instead of McCarthy.
They were nowhere near close. McCarthy was perfection. But yes, why not both? I could have live without Octavia Spencer or Janet McTeer.June 6, 2015 at 3:52 am #188138
I could have live without Octavia Spencer or Janet McTeer.
McTeer and Chastain were the only respectable nominees. Those other three spots were wasted and the winner was the absolute worst for the category.June 6, 2015 at 3:59 am #188139
Everything about Rose Byrne was spectacular in this film. Again she plays comedy great but this is yet again another different type of comedy. From her line readings to the hair to the fact that Byrne barely moves and the performance is even greater for it. By now Byrne has to be a house name for her comedy work because between this, Neighbors, Bridesmaids and Get Him to the Greek each is great comedy from her and each are such different characters. This movie is so good and shows the best in all it’s actors and is not only a great spy movie but also one about female friendships with the one between Miranda Hart and Melissa McCarthy being so well done. This movie and Feig’s previous films are even more prove Ghostbusters should be great and with Feig involved in writing he gets women and gets comedy from them being smart where most modern comedies go for dumb women but Spy is an example of Susan being a good spy and great comedy comes from scenes such as Coopet undercover and the kitchen fight.June 6, 2015 at 5:46 am #188140
Rose Byrne Rose Byrne Rose Freaking Byrne.
I loved her turn as the Duchesse Polignac.
Neighbours? She’s ok. Bridesmaids? She’s ok. Spy? Havent seen it yet! Shame! And I certainly know Statham is in this. Lol.
An Oscar nod for Byrne?
Maybe for The Meddler? Apparently a comedy-drama? The “drama” part could get her taken seriously.
Good gawd. No Janet McTeer. So sickening a thought. Spencer is a worthy winner as well.
