I can’t believe there’s not a thread already about this one. I guess people weren’t expecting this to amount to much, but I saw it this week (here’s my review: http://graemeoneil.com/2014/07/26/review-get-on-up/) and it’s a total contender.

I’m gonna keep on saying his name all season: Chadwick Boseman. He’s absolutely incredible as James Brown. If he was an A-lister, it would be a done deal that he would get a nomination, and be a major contender to win.
Tate Taylor’s direction in “The Help” didn’t stand out to me, but here, he totally impressed me. This is such a well-constructed film.

So discuss!…once other people see it.

I for one loved The Help, so I was always confident this movie would at least be good, but generally if im not a big fan or dont find the person really interesting biopics don’t appeal to me. But if this one is really as good as you say it is I’ll definitely try to check it out. And I don’t doubt Boseman gives a great performance. He’s already shown he’s a good actor, but Tate Taylor is also imo proving himself to be the next great actors director. I found almost every performance in The Help nomination worthy haha. So I’ll definitely look for this one.

The commercial seems like Boseman was perfectly cast.

I cannot wait for this movie. Everytime I see a trailer it has me dancing in my seat. Plus any excuse to see Viola Davis and Octavia Spencer especially together, I’m in. Plus I loved The Help so the same team will most likely make another outstanding movie. And I loved Chadwick in 42 from last year and he looks great in this too.

Absolutely! I consider this a must-see enough though several uppity critics have voiced their negative preconceived notions.

Be warned. Viola and Octavia don’t share any scenes!

That’s good to hear. I thought he was great in 42. I’ll be seeing this for sure.

Same!  I share your disappointment re Harrison Ford. Chadwick and Beharie are understated yet terrific. Nothing much wrong with the rest of the cast either.

I expect Boseman’s star blazes after this. Finger’s crossed! He’s in good company within that cast.

Great review, Graeme! I can’t wait to see this! How was Viola? viable contender for a supporting actress nomination?

I don’t understand why very few people are talking about this movie, I’ve been excited for this since the trailer dropped, and I’m not even an especially big fan of James Brown. I thought Boseman was fine in 42, but he really impressed me in Draft Day. He brought a lot to a supporting role, and easily outshined the rest of the cast. I currently have him in my predictions for best actor, and I don’t think I’ll be the only one by the end of the season.

Some people are not interested because it’s just ANOTHER INSPIRATIONAL MUSIC BIOPIC.

    Nothing innovative or original.

Sorry, before I started the thread I used the search to see if there was one already, and nothing came up.

I wouldn’t call it “inspirational” necessarily. It’s just the depiction of this guy who has a pretty rough childhood, and ISN’T the perfect role model when he’s older. He’s a very flawed genius…but you understand why he has the issues that he does. It’s fascinating and extremely well constructed. Like I said in my review, this isn’t a biopic that’s a bunch of episodes strung together that act like a “Greatest Hits” of a person’s life. Each scene has a purpose.
