This is a DEVASTATING death for me to take — the great John Mack Carter, one of the giants of American magazine publishing who was my mentor, good friend and father figure. He played, indirectly, a key role in the creation of Gold Derby and I want you to know this story if you have time to read this — my personal farewell salute to the man who taught me everything I know about journalism — and what’s it’s like to be a good person in this life. I wish you had known him, too ….

Really sad news even though I never met him. He seems to be a very interesting person who lived a full life and I hope he gets all the peace he deserves. RIP.

Great story Tom, and it certainly shows how important he was, that he could have been so impactful on you. I’m very sorry for your loss.

One of the best things Tom has ever written. A shame I never knew him.
