They will be all over Room, but I’m hoping they set the tone for the season and nominate Carol for Feature and twice for Actress.

Diary of A Teenage Girl leads all films with 4 nominations. Carol and Tangerine follow with three apiece.

Spotlight begins its awards campaign with a WIN – as the IFP honour the films ensemble.

I’m so happy that Kristen Wiig got in!!! While I fear that is the farthest she’ll go, I think she should get recognition for the stellar year she is having with this, The Martian, and seemingly Diary Of A Teenage Girl (which is on my to-do list). Diary, I’ll See You In My Dreams, Room, Tangerine, Grandma, Spotlight, and Carol are all on my to-do list.

It’s nice to see them stick their neck out for Diary, after it was mishandled at the box office.

The focus on these nominations should be on Carol. Pundits have been SLEEPING on it, having very little belief that its quality will translate into recognition. The fact that it’s here, in three major categories is huge.

Even better though is that Listen to Me, Marlon–easily one of the best films, in any genre this year–is recognized.

But I’m really in love with them leaving Room off of their list for Feature and Screenplay. Larson is a solid element in what is ultimately a really, really subpar film.

Room’s solitary nomination means nothing for its future prospects.

Last year, Whiplash only received one nomination at the Gotham Awards (Miles Teller in Best Actor). Look at how that ended up! Three time winner, and a Best Picture nominee at the Oscars.

Last year, Whiplash only received one nomination at the Gotham Awards (Miles Teller in Best Actor). Look at how that ended up! Three time winner, and a Best Picture nominee at the Oscars.

The bolded part is what you should be paying closer attention to because what Whiplash had going for it, Room does not:
Sony Pictures Classics (love A24, but they’re mostly untested still and couldn’t get AMVY any noms last year)
bigger celeb stars in Teller & Simmons than Larson (love her, but she’s not a brand-able star yet)
below-the-line chances (Room has no branch support and is barely competitive in any race other than Best Actress)
male POV (sad to say, but we all know that the female perspective is not the Academy’s wheelhouse)

Look, all things considered, if Room is going to have a shot at Best Picture nomination it needs ALL the support it can get from precursors, but if it can’t even win over a jury of 5 critics who can only choose from a handful of independent films then how is it going to compete against a mountain of films from studios with more money to spend, bigger stars and branch-by-branch support?

    These are awesome nominees!

Glad to see the love for Diary of a Teenage Girl (one of my favorites of the year), 99 Homes, I’ll See You in My Dreams, Welcome to Me, Results, Love & Mercy, Grandma, Tangerine, and Mistress America!

I’m glad to see The Danish Girl get no love. I feel a lot of Theory Of Everything vibes.

Cool to see Spotlight get an Ensemble win right off the bat – watching the trailer, the idea that there really are no “leads” seems pretty apparent, so this feels fitting.

Tangerine apparently played in Chicago for a hot second, but I missed it. Can’t wait to see what the fuss is about.
