    Debra Messing looks like her.

    Meh. Maybe a little.

does anyone not obsessed with oscars even know who a greer garson is?

Probably not, at least not outside of Britain and Texas (her home during the much of the second half of her life). Which is a damn shame. She was far more than just a seven-time Oscar nominee. In one way, she was a war hero. Winston Churchill credited her and the film Mrs. Miniver for helping boost the morale of the British Empire during WWII. She was also a big-time philanthropist in her later years. And having read her biography, she can easily be seen as a folk hero by those who currently see Hollywood as a cesspool that treats its actors and actresses as commodities that get left behind as they age because they are not “beautiful” and “sexy” enough. She can easily be seen as a role model for feminists, which many may find ironic because she was also a conservative Republican.

What about Andrea Riseborough? I know she’s not as big a name as Amy Adams or even Isla Fisher. She’d just be an amazing choice for Greer Garson. Would be a great breakout role for her too.

Riseborough could definitely work. I haven’t seen enough of her movies to see for sure if she has the right vocal range (she certainly looks the part), but she seems to based on what I have seen, she’d definitely be a good contender.

Funny that you mention Amy, Andrea, and Isla in the same post. All three of them recently starred together in Nocturnal Animals (though Isla doesn’t share any scenes with either Amy or Andrea).

She could work, but her vocal range is a bit shaky. She’d definitely be a better contender than other suggestions I’ve got. Not the best, but one of the better ones.

    cate Blanchett

I thought about Cate Blanchett playing Greer. She certainly looks the part and is more than capable of doing the voice. She would (probably) do a great job.

However, she’s almost 50. She’s already older than how old Greer is supposed to be by the time the screenplay ends. She’s at the point where five years from now, she will be too old to play the part. So if she wants the role, she’s on the clock right now.

Another potential issue is that this could result in her being typecast as playing red-headed actresses from the Golden Age of Hollywood. She already won an Oscar for playing Katherine Hepburn in The Aviator,  and she was recently cast to play Lucille Ball in a biopic.

Okay. It’s been almost four days, and so far all but one response to this thread have consisted only of casting suggestions for Greer Garson. No casting suggestions for the other main cast members (Walter Pidgeon, Nina Garson, Richard Ney, Louis B. Mayer, and Buddy Fogelson), and no directing suggestions.  I apologize if I didn’t make myself clear that I wanted suggestions for those other characters and for directing.

Going forward, I would appreciate it if every response consisted of casting suggestions for:

Greer Garson (try to choose someone born between 1966 and 1992)

Walter Pidgeon (try to choose someone born between 1959 and 1985)

Nina Garson (try to choose someone born between 1942 and 1968)

Richard Ney (try to choose someone born between 1980 and 2000)

Louis B. Mayer (try to choose either Christian Bale or someone born between 1946 and 1972)

Buddy Fogelson (on the right in the photo; try to choose someone born between 1962 and 1978)

I apologize for previous statements that called certain actors or actresses “too old” or “too young” if they fall within those brackets.

I’ve already replied to your suggestion of Riseborough as Greer. Now for the others.

Paul Rudd as Walter- No. He doesn’t have the right vocal range.

Kathy Bates or Lois Smith as Nina- Yes to Kathy, no to Lois. Kathy is actually my personal first choice. Lois is way to old (she’ll be 88 this year; Nina is 69 at the end of the screenplay).

Logan Lerman as Richard- That could work. He has the right vocal range, but he doesn’t look the part too much. He would need quite a bit of makeup.

EDIT: WHOOPS. My bad regarding Logan. For some odd reason, I thought he and Michael Cera were the same person. I thought Logan looked like Michael. My mistake. Yeah. Now that I actually remember what he looks like, yes. He definitely looks the part.

Albert Brooks as Louis- No. He looks the part, but doesn’t have the right vocal range.

Jason Sudeikis as Buddy- Maybe. He could look the part with some makeup. But the problem is once again vocal range. That’s the wild card. I can’t find any audio of how Buddy sounded in real life, and I haven’t heard him try a Texas accent yet.

Just to clarify, I find vocal range to be a bigger issue regarding who gets cast than I do with looks. Looks can be changed easily with makeup. Voices? A hell of a lot harder. And that is a problem especially with biopics of people whose real life voices have been recorded for reference. You can’t. Get. It. Wrong.

I’m sorry. I can’t ignore this anymore. Jon Hamm and Walter Pidgeon have to be related somehow.

Seriously, guys. Now you know why he’s my first choice for the part.

He could make a good Mayer. His vocal range I’m a bit concerned about, though. Could he pull it off? He very well could. We’ll see what happens.
