Wow. Just wow. If the academy had any taste, Collette and Wolff would be locked for nominations this season.
While I didn’t need to bring my brown velour jumpsuit for this — most horror films don’t scare me not for lacking qualities on their part but for desensitization on mine — it was so fucking anxiety-inducing. While the build-up didn’t always lead to a catharsis I wanted and (SPOILERS) demon cults are so passe these days, holy shit. Was NOT expecting the scene in the car to go that way, the fireplace, the ending, etc. I love Ari and can’t wait to see what he does next tbh. The cinematography, the score, the production design — all on point.
True, the CinemaScore is undeserved. I partially blame whoever makes trailers for cutting up atmospheric art house fare like It Comes At Night (which I liked) and turning into a generic jump scare horror thriller that will of course disappoint audiences who were expecting something different. But it honestly surprised me that it would be so low for this, which while not chock full of jump scares and gore, wasn’t too oblique. I’m guessing it was to do with the ending, which was admittedly very much reminiscent of The VVitch, which I didn’t like at all.
Oh, well. Still a great film in my book. An easy ~A~June 9, 2018 at 8:56 pm #1202561933
I am really eager to watch the movie. But so sad they are not releasing it in my country 🙁June 10, 2018 at 12:21 am #1202561992
I think the climax (burning) was kindda weak tbh, therefore the ending was lame too. I had problems with the hackneyed ritual details.
But sure as hell Colette deserves a nomination, that guy Wolff was impressive as well!June 10, 2018 at 2:17 am #1202562010
Toni Colette was outstanding! Liked this MUCH better than I thought I would.June 10, 2018 at 9:09 am #1202562166
I’m seeing this on Monday. My friend’s birthday is coming up and we asked him what he wanted to do…..he proceeded to go to fandango and buy tickets to 7:40 showing and said “Just give me the money tomorrow”. Here’s the catch: He is scared of horror movies and is a screamer/jumper when something happens. So naturally he chose the most packed showing.June 10, 2018 at 10:42 am #1202562191

I wish my theater had been emptier tbh, everyone around me felt compelled to do the tongue click thing every 5 seconds -_-June 10, 2018 at 11:23 am #1202562209
Wanted to love it so badly but unfortunately found it way overhyped. Of course Collette and especially Wolff were great though. Other than that, this wasn’t anything special and not comparable to The Exorcist in terms of quality whatsoever. Biggest disappointment of the year for me thus far.June 10, 2018 at 11:30 am #1202562215
That’s why I do not enjoy going to theater anymore. I used to go there twice or three times a week but now I only do it once or less often. And mostly going to morning showings. Audiences are just awful these days. They’re loud and obnoxious. The worst is when one moron does something he conisders funny another moron giggles and then that moron thinks ‘oh I am so hilarious I’m gonna do this over and over again’ and theater staff never does a shit about it. I prefer watching movies in home because of it.June 10, 2018 at 12:19 pm #1202562245
I was sitting next to a bunch of idiots that kept giggling. They stopped once I told them to shut up though.June 10, 2018 at 12:24 pm #1202562249

Ur comment made me think how it’d be if all of us in GoldDerby actually met up and talked about either TV or films. Not everyone would make it out alive.June 10, 2018 at 5:52 pm #1202562407
The first three-quarters made me believe I was watching a classic until the whole thing collapses in the third act. And once again I was reminded I was watching a movie made today.June 10, 2018 at 6:45 pm #1202562468
This was terrifying. I’m all for Toni and Alex receiving Oscar nominations.June 10, 2018 at 7:42 pm #1202562540
This sucked ass. The audience laughing at the final scene should tell you all you need to know. Toni Collette with open mouth close ups OVER AND OVER is not film friendly. This just sucked, sorry. It explains the D+ Cinemascore.
