Some of you remember the old Gold Derby, but for those of you who don’t, please take a look at the pic below — this is a snapshot of the site during the 2002 derby. Users would click on each pundit’s head and that would take you to a page where they featured their predictions with explanatory text. Then we’d take the combined view and issue rankings and racetrack odds. Notice that Dave Karger, Anne Thompson and Thelma Adams were with us from the earliest days of Oscar tracking. So was Pete Hammond, but I don’t see him in this screen shot — he must’ve been late with his predix at this point and so that explains the blank pundit in the bottom right corner.
Gold Derby launched around 1999 as just message boards. We scrapped the software a few times and tried new forums, so that meant our people had to re-register a few times. The front part of the site — GoldDerby.com — launched in 2000, so Gladiator vs. Crouching Tiger was the first race we covered with pro journalists. In 2005, the LA Times took over Gold Derby in a license deal that I terminated in 2010 when I decided the site needed to be more interactive and should give YOU a chance to make predix and compete against the “Experts,” applying the model of fantasy sports.
I kinda miss this old approach, though, don’t you? BTW, the illustrations were done by Ty Wilson (see his work at TyWilson.com), a very famous artist. Example: every time you watch a Sienfeld episode, the walls are covered with Ty Wilson lithographs in the background.July 31, 2013 at 10:53 am #106914
I found the site when it was at The Envelope, so this is my first taste of Old Derby. Very nice! I like those drawings.July 31, 2013 at 12:14 pm #106915
Has it been almost 15 years already?! Yeesh. I was online from the beginning, but didn’t register until November 2001, I think.July 31, 2013 at 3:42 pm #106916
Those were the days.
Most people won’t realise, but I’ve been around these parts well over a decade.July 31, 2013 at 3:46 pm #106917
I like the old visuals, but I feel that in 2013, Goldderby is doing great with letting us make our own predictions. I registered only a few years ago, but I had been following the site for a few months by that point. I found it through one of your emmy podcasts actually!
I’ve had a great time on this site. I just wish we had a forum which was a little more active throughout the year instead of just a few months before the actual awards events (during which time, we’re peerless).September 27, 2013 at 9:14 am #106919

The build up to the Emmys this year was phenomenal, and the eventual results were hilariously exciting I’m sure we all agree for better or worse! All thanks to GoldDerbySeptember 27, 2013 at 9:31 am #106921
I remember this layout….it was like this when I first joined. Fun blast from the past!September 27, 2013 at 9:35 am #106922
I remember when I joined was the year Friends and Jennifer Aniston won Emmys, so I guess that was 2002.September 27, 2013 at 9:38 am #106923

O my. Geez, we’re THAT much older………miss the old site. Really miss the chatrooms. They were so much damned fun! We were far free-er to say whatever we wanted in there. So hilarious.
