If it could have been nominated, what should have High School Musical 3 been nominated for at Golden Globe Awards, SAG Awards and Oscars?

^It could’ve been nominated because it was a theatrical release, but it just wasn’t nominated for anything, which is how it should’ve been.

High School Musical 3 was one of the most enjoyable nights I’ve ever had in a movie theater.  I saw the midnight showing, and it was filled with college students, all having a great time.  People who are overly critical of HSM need to lighten up.  It’s entertainment for kids/pre-teens that is fun and isn’t condescending.  You also can’t deny that Kenny Ortega knows exactly what he’s doing when it comes to directing his choreography.  He consistently has the most well-filmed musical numbers of any director of recent movie musicals.  I consider High School Musical 3 to be his masterpiece.

As far as Oscar noms go, I think it was robbed in:

    1. Editing
    2. Cinematography
    3. Art Direction
    4. Sound Mixing
    5. Original Song: “Can I Have This Dance”

Horrible movie. The first one was good. I remeber being a fan of that one. The second and third ones were pretty bad.

I’m sorry, but I started laughing uncontrollably after you said HSM was a masterpiece. The first one was reasonably okay, but the second and third ones were terrible. Oscar would have been downgraded if the Academy had even considered HSM for any nominations.

@Kevin, Carol said HSM 3 was Kenny Ortegas masterpiece, referring to the musical numbers. Not saying he thought the film was a masterpiece.

You think high school musical 3 was robbed of 5 academy award nominations? I give up.

Did you even see it?  If not, then you have no business commenting on it.

If you did see it, please tell me what was so terrible about the editing, cinematography, art direction, etc. that would warrent them to not be nominated.  As terrible as you may think the movie, as a whole, might be, you can’t deny that these technical aspects on their own are very good and incredibly inventive with a clear, interesting vision.  It’s not like I’m giving it a screenplay nomination or something.

How about we all get over ourselves and realize that entertainment for kids is just a different genre from your typical, Oscar-baity drama?  For what it is and what it set out to do, it’s a great movie.

And, yes, it is Kenny Ortega’s masterpiece.  He has put out some fantastic family entertainment throughout the years.  Hocus Pocus is a staple in American family comedy.  Newsies (as awful as some parts are) is a major cult classic with brilliantly filmed musical numbers.  And the first High School Musical is one of the most iconic movies of its decade that launched one of the most successful franchises in teen pop culture.  So, like it or not, you gotta give credit where credit is due.

I love Newsies and Hocus Pocus but HSM 3 is not even in the same league as those movies. It was that bad. Yes, HSM is a huge franchise BUT becuase of the first one beng that good. The others were just so predictable and not even half as good as the first. Oscars were never in HSM 3’s future.

^And ‘HSM 3’ will never be in Oscar’s past. Which is fine by me (I’ve seen all three by the way).

Story-wise, the first one is definitely superior.  But technically, the third one is pretty stunning.  Granted you probably can’t even compare what the budget must have been for the third one to the first one.

The second one… has great musical numbers… except for “Bet On It,” which is probably the most laughably bad musical number ever put on film.  It’s so brilliantly terrible that you can’t help but love it.  And the second one has Ashley Tisdale carrying the whole movie on her shoulders.  She’s great in it.  Other than that, it’s definitely the most forgettable one.
