Forgive me as I haven’t been closely following the Oscar race at all this year. But I’m wondering if you guys consider Hilary Swank or the movie The Homesman to be a contender at all for anything? I can’t help but notice that it wasn’t nominated for any major Golden Globes or SAG Awards.

Does this mean the movie isn’t a contender or will it possibly have some buzz later on?   Also, is the movie even eligible this year?

The movie is a total bomb…
Hardly played and had bad word of mouth by the masses.
    Swank, as i said earlier..has NO< NADA< ZILCH chance
of being nominated.. Possibly cinematography might
throw the film its 1 bone, otherwise I see nothing else
    worthy about the HOMESMAN…
It turns out that even a weak year for best actress, SWANK
cannot cut the mustard…BTW if you didnt know, I think
she is highly over-rated and only deserves 1 of her Oscars.

You obviously don’t like her at all because you are not being honest. The film might not have the best grossings but it is a critically acclaimed film with much praise to Hilary Swank. Lets not lie!!!

Is there at least something to be said for the idea that nobody in the general public has seen it? All the buzz it had is long gone. I never had a chance to see it, because it never came to my town. I also have a friend who is a total Streep fanatic who never got to see it despite living in Toronto and checking the listings for it every week for two months. Whoever distributed this film botched it big time.

It definitely played in Toronto because I saw it there.  It played at the Yonge & Dundas theatre for one week (four shows daily) and then the next week (just one show daily).  Then, it was gone.  A brief run.

I thought it was good and Swank was great so I am clueless on why she isn’t getting nominations the only answer is people aren’t seeing it

I think it still has a strong possibility in Cinematography, Original Score and Costume Design. Hilary Swank’s performance was amazing, but unfortunately she won’t make it in for Best Actress. The film really needed a bigger distributor. It was only released in a limited run in less than 200 theaters, and grossed $2 million in the US (close to $4 million worldwide).

I personally thought Swank’s performance was extraoridnary in an uneven film. Beyond the fact that not enought people saw this movie I would argue that the fact that she is only in 2/3 of the movie might also harm her chances. I think she’s much better than one particular “lock” nominee, and even better than two others who have better odds than she does (I still haven’t seen Jennifer Aniston, Marion Cotillard or Julianne Moore’s performances, hence no opinion on their work yet). I would rank her work in The Homesman is the best of her entire career (I didn’t like Boys Don’t Cry or Million Dollar Baby).

I think she’s still one of the eight actresses who could potentially get nominated: Amy Adams, Jennifer Aniston, Marion Cotillard, Felicity Jones, Julianne Moore, Rosamund Pike, Hilary Swank and Reese Witherspoon. (Aniston, Jones, Moore, Pike and Witherspoon are my predictions).

The movie is definitely worth seeing, so long as you can deal with a film that is wildly uneven – some of it is superb and some of it is lackluster.

“The Homesman” might be my least favorite movie of 2014.

16M budget, 2M grosses… 54% audience rating on RT. Yeah — it’s not going anywhere.

It was also a poorly advertised run. All in all, it seemed like there wasn’t any confidence in the film from the distributor and the marketing. I think they were relying on awards buzz that didn’t pan out as much as anticipated.

I noticed that early on in the season she (Swank) was in the THR Roundtable being touted as a possible nominee, but then I never heard anything about the movie being released or heard any buzz for her whatsoever… that’s why I got confused, also cause the plot I read on wikipedia sounded amazing.

I’m not a huge fan of the film, but overall I did like it. Swank, the score by Marco Beltrami, and Rodrigo Prieto’s cinematography are all great.
