I would have given him the win (yup) for Half Nelson and a nomination for Lars and the Real Girl. He’s in my sixth place spot for both Blue Valentine and Drive.

He has made many good and/or interesting movies in the last few years (even if they are starring to blur into each other), so I am a fan and respect him, but his roles lately have not been quite complex enough to say that he has been snubbed when others with meatier material are in contention.  A nomination for him will never disappoint me though because I am rooting for him.

O geez Ryan Gosling. Am I biased? You betcha

Films he’s been terrific in: ALL

Films he was deserving of an Oscar nom/win:

    Lars and the Real Girl

    Ides of March

    The Place Beyond the Pines

Crazy, Stupid. Love…Hey. I said I’m biased. Ryan is hilarious here.

    Drive

    Half Nelson

    Blue Velvet

    The Slaughter Rule

And props to All Good Things, a box office flop that Ryan is great in.

No “favorite” for me from the above, and I’m certain I’m forgetting something.

His nod for Half Nelson was deserved.

In 2007 I would have replaced Johnny Depp, Tommy Lee Jones and The Cloonster with Mathieu Amalric, Gosling and Casey Affleck (who belonged in lead).

In 2010 I would have replaced Bridges, Bardem and Franco with Gosling, Ewan McGregor and Edgar Ramirez (though I know he was ineligible)

A supporting nod for Crazy, Stupid, Love would have definitely been deserved.

I don’t think there’s much to his performance in Drive, but it’s a near great movie, and that was a relatively weak lead actor year, so I wouldn’t have minded him getting in for that.

So, in total I would have liked to have seen him with five nominations by now and maybe a win for Half Nelson, though Whitaker’s win doesn’t bother me.

I think is great to see an actor that can be both hot and talented, and he is as hot as talented (and he is VERY hot)

    2011: Best Actor, Drive
    2010: Best Actor, Blue Valentine
2007: Best Actor, Lars and the Real Girl
    2006: Best Actor, Half Nelson

I like Gosling, but I would never have voted for him for a nom. I can’t argue with his nomination for Half-Nelson, but it’s not a favorite of mine.

    REVERSE SEXISM?
I’ll grant you Gosling is a hot little fucker, but I really don’t like any of his films, so no, I don’t feel like he is being unfairly overlooked by Oscar. But it’s a hell of a lot easier for a hot young actress (i.e,, whoever is crowned this year’s “It” girl) to win an Oscar than it is for a hot young actor like Gosling to win.

Great! You may also find Shareeka Epps more than up to the task.

Nelson and Pines. I thought he was best out of all (everyone was good) in Pines, with the little he had. The scene in the church was heartbreaking.
I’d like to see him tackle more complex roles though.

Interesting. Personally I feel Gosling has played some of the most complex individuals on screen. Drive, Half Nelson, Lars and the Real Girl, Pines, Blue Valentine, (the almost unwatchable) Only God Forgives. Unless you mean the films themselves are conventional, which I would also debate with you.
