There are several examples over the years of debut performances getting Oscar nominations, but this year there could be two: Barkhad Abdi and Lupita Nyong’o. How often does that happen?

My initial research has turned up two examples:

    – 1996: Emily Watson and Edward Norton
    – 1984: Haing S. Ngor and John Malkovich

Are those the two most recent examples? Does anyone know how many there were before that?

If only LAFCA winner Dwight Henry had been nominated.

    In 1966 there were three:

Jocelyn LaGarde – Hawaii (Her only role ever)
Alan Arkin – The Russians are Coming! The Russians are coming!
    VIvien Merchant – Alfie

It is also significant as the only year where two sisters competed against each other in an acting category, with Lynn and Vanessa Redgrave both losing Best Actress to Elizabeth Taylor.

I didn’t realize they were sisters, because of the different last names. Thanks for making me aware of this!

I think the question posed was film debuts by multiple actors in the same oscar season…??????

Not to mention if you count non-Hollywood voiceover roles, Julie Andrews technically did not debut in Mary Poppins — though it was her first on-screen role.  As a teen, she voiced the lead character in the 1952 UK dub of the 1949 Italian animated film La Rosa di Bagdad (then released as The Rose of Bagdad).  In 1967, after her star turns in Mary Poppins & The Sound of Music, that film was dusted off and released in America as The Singing Princess, with Julie getting star billing.

Also, either Lupita Nyong’o (though she appeared in a 2000 short and directed a 2009 documentary) or Barkhad Abdi, if they win, would become only the second black actor to win for his or her feature-film debut, after Jennifer Hudson in Dreamgirls
(Edit: Not to mention either, along with Chiwetel Ejiofor & Steve McQueen, could become the first black non-American to win an Oscar, with Abdi being the first of African birth.  The only African-born winner so far is white South African Charlize Theron; though Nyong’o is a Kenyan, she was born in Mexico.)  And depending on how you define the term “amateur actor”, Abdi would
become only the third amateur actor to win an Oscar, after Harold
Russell in The Best Years of Our Lives and Haing S. Ngor in The Killing Fields.

1975 had Chris Sarandon, Lily Tomlin and Brad Dourif (if you don’t count an uncredited appearance that may have just been extra work)
