Has a film been nominated 8 times and won nothing? Looking at you Arrival.

And how often does sound editing and sound mixing split? If La La gets editing (will definitely get mixing), I can see it getting 11 oscars, but that is without original screenplay. Can’t see the academy not giving manchester at least one, especially if denzel beats casey. Wga is coming up still, so that could help maybe?

Edit: a post from filmatelist says:

“Only once in the last 40 years has a film won Sound Mixing and *lost* Sound Editing (SLUMDOG). Whenever there’s a split, it’s because the Mixing winner was not nominated for Editing (DREAMGIRLS, LES MIZ, WHIPLASH, BIRD, MOHICANS, etc.).

There will be no split this year. Whichever film takes one will also take the other.”

That was before last years oscars, when mad max went onto win both.

That’s true. It’s also true that musicals don’t get nominated for Editing. This one was. Could it win? Obviously. But because we haven’t seen it play out with a live-action musical nominated for both, a split is not entirely out of question. And Hacksaw could win its consolation prize here.

Oh, it’s happened. The first two that come to mind: American Hustle and Gangs of New York.

That fact that Slumdog lost Sound Editing to The Dark Knight but still won Mixing suggests that there might be just enough people in the Academy that have an inkling of the difference between the two categories. “Sound Mixing” makes you think of music and balancing of volume; “Sound Editing” not so much. So I think we could see a split this year.

Doesn’t matter if Arrival wins nothing. The Color Purple, The Turning Point lost all of its 11 nominations, while American Hustle and Gangs of New York lost all 10 nominations. Arrival will not win any Oscars, but it has nothing to be worried about considering those other 4 films.

La La Land will have to be an insane favorite come Oscar night, which it might be, to win Sound Editing. I think it wins Sound Mixing easily while Hacksaw wins Editing. With Hacksaw having a nice shot at Sound Mixing too.

The True Grit remake had 10 nods and lost them all.
