Well today I was kinda rooting for and against this movie. On the one hand I loved it and I think it deserved the win. But on the other I was afraid, that that win can unleash a big amount of hate because it beat some of the people’s favourites (Dunkirk, Get Out, Three Billboards).

I think the hate may be softened by the fact that it’s a fantasy, and some people will be like “Oh, I’m glad they recognized genre flick”. So that fact can help it a little when people will look back at this win.

How do you think The Shape will be remembered in say 20 years?

I think it will be even worse.

I think Guillermo del Toro did an excellent job, but I think the one that will age better will be Dunkirk, to be honest. I rooted for 3 Billboards, though.

I think even now most people who watch Dunkirk find it either boring if pretty to look at or they find it incoherent and impossible to follow the storylines, or more often I find it being all of the above. I feel totally confident in predicting all of its tech wins will look much worse with age.

As for The Shape of Water, I believe it will be remembered as a wonderful and entertaining fantasy film that people will be entertained by for all time. It won’t be as universally loved as Get Out, which I predict will have the greatest and most enduring legacy on a populist level of all the Best Picture nominees, but it will still be generally admired for sure.

Most people I know HATED Dunkirk and said that watching it one time was more than enough. I don’t think it will age that well. I love Nolan’s other movies but I would never put myself through the torture of watching Dunkirk again. The only movies that will stand the test of time are: The Shape Of Water (I knew it was going to win), Get Out and CMBYN. Maybe Lady Bird but it’s a big maybe. Congrats to everyone for your scores!

I hope people in the future realize how weak and uninspired this film is. I already don’t see a lot of entusiasm in its win.

As an overblown, self-indulgent, trite piece of filmmaking full of pretty bells and whistles but ultimately about BESTIALITY with multiple allegations as well as a lawsuit against it for plagiarism

I think “TSOW” will be seen as a consensus, apolitical choice in a year that could have done better in that respect. That’s what you get with preferential balloting in divisive years moving forward. It has a timeless appeal to its filmmaking, so it’ll age just fine, but many will believe (rightfully so in my view) that other films should have won BP instead. The plagiarism lawsuit might’ve been more of a thing if it happened earlier, but clearly voters didn’t give a shit about it. Maybe that all dies down now, or it’ll be a ding in the film’s reputation if it blows up. Only time will tell.

I don’t think any of these movies will be remembered in future because not a single movie is that good. But I think animation movies like coco and the breadwinner will be remembered.

There’s always a lot of backlash to BP winners, but I think the movie will ultimately be remembered as a fine best picture winner.

It will age fine like wine, it is a worthy win for the genre and topic.

I don’t think it’ll age that well. It will be considered a decent pick, but also a minor one.

I think it will be remembered with a shrug. In what was really a down year, it was just the film that got a consensus. Heck, most people barely remember sweepers, doubt they will remember one that snuck to a win.

I really wonder how this became an industry pet project in the end. Guillermo and the cast must have a lot of friends…
