The last podcast I did with Tariq Khan was such an entertaining SMACKDOWN that it set a new record for most popular audio download at Gold Derby (more than 10,000 — PLUS many more thousands at iTunes and Libsyn). Tariq’s a great old pal of mine who is normally one of the most brilliant Oscarologists on the planet (I recruited him to join our esteemed panel of experts in our charts), but this year I knew he was off his nut and I tried everything (ridicule, common sense, shouting, laughing) to talk him off the ledge, but he insisted upon taking plunges for Riva and De Niro. Now we go at it AGAIN while I TRY to make him GROVEL and acknowledge what an idiot he had been, but he proves to be just as fiesty as before. Tune in to the latest podcast on our homepage — it’s very funny, played up for high camp, of course:

There’s a link in that box to the previous podcast if you want to hear that bitchfight.

Khan is no King that’s for sure ; and he’s no Oracle of Delphi … more like the ”Oracle of Duufus ”…..I mean , he predicted DiCaprio  for BSA in the Globes  and then Barzem in BAFTA…  AND THEN Deniro in the Oscars…wrong , wrong , WRONG and not even the merest hint of the looming WALTZ…talk about having a keen grasp of the obvious …but worst of all he’ll still be flogging those dead horses afterwards

Speaking metaphorically , he was snoozing on an airbed filled with self assured   confidence about his prophetic powers , when, out of the deep loomed the spectre of the great white shark WALTZ…sheesh …he never even knew what hit him !   …he was like a boxer who had just been clobbered that  was seeing more stars than Carl Sagan   and  hearing more deranged bell ringing than Quasimodo !

Hmmmmmm….I wonder if he’s recovered enough to be even aware of whats just happened

I don’t understand why official predictors have to apologize for predicting wrong. Predicting is a game. You win, you lose. However, the problem is that people lose their reputation and the money for their websites.

Just heard the bitchslap, Tariq and Tom sound like the perfect couple living together, Ernie and Bert, but which one is which?  Picture the pair in the bedroom, one suffocating the other with a pillow.

Unless someone has access to the actual totals to see if Riva lost by one vote or 100 or 1000, the idea of ridiculing the notion that predicting a Riva win makes someone look bad is baseless.
And this comes from someone who predicted Lawrence.
There was considerable evidence that this was a close race. Predicting Watts or Wallis would deserve a putdown. Not this.

Scot ferguson…..”Slippery when wet ”?…you managed to safely hedge your bets….you must be a politician OR a Lawyer  and manage nicely to ride two horses at the same time

I would be curious to know how badly Riva was beaten ; I bet it wasn’t even close

Predicting Deniro for an Oscar when he won ZERO precursers, well  deserves a putdown

If I remember correctly , you had Waltz in 3rd or 4th place …keen grasp of the obvious ?

I had Waltz with a 25% chance of winning in a very close race. I am not unhappy with my analysis. He had a solid chance to win, and I said so.

My multi-year track record of Oscar analysis around here is something I’m proud of. You’ve been here a few weeks, and spoke of things as certainty that were anything but. You got lucky. Do this for many years in a row and I’ll change my opinion.

When they make their predictions in same obnoxious and arrogant way as Tariq did for both supporting actor and actress, they deserve a ribbing regardless of how close it was.

I wasn’t lucky …it was obvious that WALTZ was going to win ; same with Lawrence …I also confidently predicted Django for original screenplay and Argo for addapted ; infact the only prediction I got wrong was ”wreck it Ralph”

If you were a Detective you would unwittingly frame the prime witness and allow the serial killer to walk free

This reminds me of a joke I heard about Sherlock Holmes and Watson on a camping trip ; I’m going to change Watson to Ferguson

So Sherlock and Ferguson  go on a camping trip to Alaska to experience the ”Great Outdoors” and the northern lights where they pitch their tent in Denali Nation Park .

..In the middle of the night Sherlock wakes up and says ”FERGUSON  ! WAKE UP , look up at the sky and tell me what you deduce  ?

…says Ferguson ”Well I see the great Northern Lights , the Milky way Galaxy , a tapestry of  billions of stars and potentially millions of planets teeming with life in various stages of evolution  !”…

says Sherlock …”FERGUSON ….YOU FOOL !…SOMEONE HAS STOLEN THE TENT !

Yes well. my educated guess is that “Ferguson” wasnt out camping to shoot and kill wild boars with the help of a pair of dogs.

Come on, I had Waltz at second, with Jones only a reluctant first, but it wasn’t obvious he was gonna win. I thought there was a strong chance he might, but he wasn’t a sure thing. And this comes from a huge fan of Waltz and “Django”.

I know all of this is supposed to be fun, but, Tom, you’re a bit of a bully in these podcasts vs. Tariq.  He has beaten you soundly in the past and as you said the one of the top Oscarologists who has made bold and correct choices in the past,  Furthermore, this year you weren’t even in the top tier of experts picks.  So not sure why you’re gloating so much.

Since we don’t know what the tallies were for these votes, calling someone else’s failed predictions “ridiculous” is baseless.
