If the Best Picture category always had to have ten pictures what pictures do you think would’ve rounded out the field in other years, rather it be the recent 8/9 picture years or the 5 picture years.

I often think about this, if there were 10 I think the following would have been nominated:

    2015:
    Carol
    Inside Out

    2014:
    Foxcatcher
    Unbroken (based on tech nominations)

    2013:
    Blue Jasmine

    2012:
    Skyfall

    2011:
The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo

    2010:
    ten nominees

    2009:
    ten nominees

    2008:
    The Dark Knight
    Doubt
    Wall-E
    Waltz With Bashir
    The Wrestler

    2007:
    The Bourne Ultimatum
The Diving Bell and the Butterfly
    Into the Wild
    Ratatouille
Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street

    2006:
    Dreamgirls
    Little Children
    Notes on a Scandal
    Pan’s Labyrinth
    United 93

    2005:
    Cinderella Man
    The Constant Gardener
    A History of Violence
    Memoirs of a Geisha
    Walk the Line

    2004:
    Closer
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
    Hotel Rwanda
    The Incredibles
    Vera Drake

    2003:
    City of God
    Cold Mountain
    Finding Nemo
    In America
Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl

    2015:
    Carol
    Straight Outta Compton
(Though I wouldn’t rule out Ex Machina given the PGA nom and VFX win. Inside Out is unlikely as it missed out at PGA and underperformed in nominations.)

    2014:
Foxcatcher (obviously, given the Directing nod and various other major noms)
    Nightcrawler (despite the Gyllenhaal snub)

    2013:
Blue Jasmine (it couldn’t be anything else)

    2012:
Skyfall (though Moonrise Kingdom gives me pause as it was also a PGA nominee)

    2011:
The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo

    2008:
    The Dark Knight
    Doubt
    Frozen River
    Revolutionary Road
    WALL-E

    2007:
    Away from Her
    The Bourne Ultimatum
The Diving Bell and the Butterfly
    Into the Wild
    Ratatouille

    2006:
    Children of Men
    Dreamgirls
    Little Children
    Notes on a Scandal
    Pan’s Labyrinth
(Something tells me United 93 would’ve been a rare Directing nominee to not even make a field of 10)

    2005:
    Cinderella Man
    The Constant Gardener
    The Squid and the Whale
    Syriana
    Walk the Line

    2004:
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
    Hotel Rwanda
    The Incredibles
The Motorcycle Diaries (its surprise Song win, as well as its multiple BAFTA nominations and screenplay Oscar nom, indicate its popularity)
    Vera Drake

    2003:
    City of God
    Cold Mountain
    Finding Nemo
    In America
    21 Grams

    2002:
    Adaptation
    Far from Heaven
    Frida
    Road to Perdition
    Talk to Her

    2001:
    Amélie
    Black Hawk Down
    Iris
    Memento
    Monster’s Ball
(Mulholland Drive still might have been a sole Directing nominee.)

    2000:
    Almost Famous
    Billy Elliot
    Cast Away
    Wonder Boys
    You Can Count on Me

2015 would have likely added Carol and Inside Out.

For 2014? I’m thinking Foxcatcher and Interstellar.

    2013: Blue Jasmine, almost definitely.
    2012: The Master
2011: The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo

I think the remaining 5 nominees for 2008 would have been:
    The Dark Knight
    Doubt
    Revolutionary Road
    WALL-E
    The Wrestler

    2007:
The Diving Bell and the Butterfly
    La Vie En Rose
    Ratatouille
    American Gangster
    Into the Wild

    2006:
    Dreamgirls (most definitely)
    Pan’s Labyrinth
    Children of Men
    Notes on a Scandal
    United 93

    2005:
    Walk the Line
    Pride & Prejudice
    The Constant Gardener
    Cinderella Man
    Syriana

2004: (very much in the consensus here)
    Vera Drake
    Hotel Rwanda
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
    The Incredibles
    Closer

    2003:
    Cold Mountain
    In America
    City of God
    House of Sand and Fog
    21 Grams

    2002:
    Catch Me If You Can
    Frida
    Far From Heaven
    Talk to Her
    Road to Perdition

2001: (this one was pretty difficult to nail down)
    Black Hawk Down
    Amélie
    Iris
    Shrek
    Ali
